water pump got me :(
not even 5 minutes from arriving at work, the motor just went flaccid, then got the yellow overheat light, followed by red (by this time i was pulled over as i knew what was happening). It was time, car has 110k miles on the original water pump. got towed home, confirmed the water pump code, ordered the parts, now get to have fun this weekend! boy i love my 335!

At least you weren't 2 hours from home when yours went out...with the replacement sitting on your workbench. Who procrastinates? This guy!

I did it on the xi. it's really not that bad, but you can't see a lot of the clamps. remove the front right wheel, that gives you room for a couple of them. I also moved the power steering hoses out of the way which is a must.
The hardest part is taking all the hose clamps off the pump. BMW doesn't exactly put their cars together to be worked on anymore, so all the hose clamps are clocked in such a way that you can't easily get to them. I watched the RWD videos and basically made it up as I went. Just don't unbolt the thermostat from the pump until you get all the hoses disconnected. once you get the hoses all disconnected, all of the bolts for the pump are pretty easy to get to. the rest is cake. and when you put it back together, clock the clamps so you can get them off easier next time. I made a couple of them reachable from above, and the others from the FR wheel well. |

110K you fared well. Mine went at 70k, I did luck out though and the car didn't quit on me. Fan kicked on almost immediately, no CEL's though; limped to the dealer and had it changed CPO.

I bought my BMW used with 119k on it, should i be safe to assume that the water pump was already replaced? Is there a way to really tell?

Bought it at a stealership, I am not sure they have the records. Although i could if i wanted, track down the previous owner and it may be creepy but, contact him and ask him or her lol rather not, i mean what is the life of a pump for these cars?

i think most fail between 80-100k miles? obviously some before and some later. the dealer should have records if the work was done at a stealership.

It was an independent dealer, a smaller dealer, not the BMW dealership directly. Now im at 125k on an extended warranty that covers waterpump failure. So atleast i know that it would be covered, but i guess the thought of possibly being stranded because of it failing doesnt make me feel safe about taking a trip for example lol

I just bought mine used last OCT and finally called the local BMW dealership yesterday. Give them a call and bring your registration and license and they will hook you up with a print out of all maintenance done at any BMW dealership. includes Recalls/warranty replacements whole 9 yards. I suggest you park when you get there don't let them take your car in or they'll tell you everything under the sun is wrong with it. Im going there this weekend and im going to drive our VW so they don't even ask lol Ordered wifi dongle and BMWhat so im pulling codes this weekend myself.

Are there shadow codes thrown by a failing water pump? My pump was working fine AFAICT the last time I brought my car to my mechanic, but he was able to get my warranty company to pay for a replacement. With 76k miles on the car, I am thankful for that.
