8 years of N54
Hello fellow e90 junkies,
It's been a long time since I've joined the N54 community (summer of 2007) and it's time for me to be moving on. I would like to share my story, experience and opinions with you, just in case it at all matters It all started for me with an E92 Black 335i in the year of 2007 when the N54 platform was introduced to the world, and everyone minds were blown, mine included. One wonderful morning I was driving along in my brand new 2007 G35 that I had just leased, and a new slick BMW pulled up to me at a red light. Surely, i thought, i'm gonna put a little room between us on the way from 0 to 60. Boy was I wrong. 335 took off and I was dumb founded. 2 days later I went to the dealership and picked up my first 335i. 2007, no oil cooler, automatic. Couple of months go by and i get my first tune, JB+! Back then Terry was just starting with his tunes, and I had one of those shift knob resistors. Want more power? Pull over, pop the hood, turn the knob on the resistor and hope for the best! Then came the bolt ons. Intake, DVs, dps, exhaust, intercooler... Car was fast. Very fast, for 2008. There were still many problems with tuning, limp modes, overheating etc. Long story short, right arounf 30k miles the trans decided to give up, so i ditched the car. After taking a year off from racing and modding, i picked up my second 335. White 2008 Auto. Oil cooler, everything proper. This is where things went a little nuts. 2 weeks after having the car it was FBO + Meth. LSD, Wheels, body panels, trunks etc etc etc. Things got a bit expensive... Car ran great, but i got used to the power. Along came one of the first RB turbos. I got one of the good ones, and had a great run with them for 30,000 miles. No rattle, no smoke, great performance. Beat the crap out of them. After about 35k miles they started to smoke. Here's a couple of vids of when they worked flawlessly: and many many more... I've been lingering between 500 and 600 horsepower for a couple of years, and it just seems to be the braking point for this platform. Anything above that, you are looking at some serious cash... I tried to go bigger, but was unsuccessful in doing so. That doesnt mean that it's not possible, but it just didn't work out for me... I've moved on, and got myself a GTR, and so far i'm very satisfied with my choice. I want to say big thanks to Terry with Burger Motorsports. He is hands down the best tuner I have ever worked with, not only because he produced a quality product, but the customer support that came along with it. I dont have enough fingers on both my hands and feet to count all the times that Terry has gone above and beyond to help me with my car. Big thanks to Rob with RB turbo as well. Great product and good, straight forward customer support. You won't go wrong with BMS or RB. In conclusion, my opinion is if you want a nice, very street fast and agile car, RB Turbo 335 is a great bang for the buck. If you want big power, and earth shattering results, there are a couple of easier platforms out there. I've made many great friends here. Hope to keep in touch and see you guys at race events and car meets. Keep pushing this thing forward, we all know what these things are capable of! Here's a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure: |

Wow man great story and advice! Hate to see you go along with your knowledge for us new comers but glad to see you happy in something new! Thanks again for leaving on a good note rather than bashing our cars and only mentioning all of the negatives like some others currently. Good luck to you!
Edit: videos were awesome and your car looked great! |

Nice upgrade Nissal GTR / 911 turbo only two cars that would replace my 335. I think about selling the 3 and my 350z at least one a week to get a GTR. Any regrets with the decision ?

Absolutely no regrets. I still have both cars, and its just night and day... I still enjoy my 335, but GTR is just a whole different animal. Mine is already FBO E85(650-ish wheel) so...

Hope to see you at the next No Fly Zone in your gtr, hopefully by then I have my M3 but I won't be anywhere near your horsepower level. I did see your car at these events and always saw Terry giving you customer support. If I remember right I think at the first or second No Fly Zone you blew the charge pipe I think it was towards the end of the day. The 335 was always moving fast out there.

I'm intrigued by 335 to gtr converts... I haven't driven a gtr but I have considered one. Something tells me I'll be disappointed in the amenities and niceness of a e90xi in comparison

What about interior / audio / daily drivability? I'd likely sell my c6 and 335 and drive the gtr 24/7 summer or winter

Absolutely a blast. Interior is very nice. Audio system is Boss and better than my 3, for sure. Driveability? If you like sports cars, you'll love GTR.
