Seafoam on an N54?
Has anyone used SeaFoam on their N54? What were your results?
Just curious if it's worth buying for a 75,000 mile car. I know walnut blasting is a better choice, but until I arrange for that, I was hoping SeaFoam might help.

I put a can in the tank every now and then but there is probably no point since it's direct injection. It would only help clean the injectors.

SeaFoam is like $10 and takes fifteen seconds to pour in your tank. Walnut blasting is several hundred and takes hours.
Also, I'm not terribly likely to drive to SoCal for it. Thanks.

He could also be referring to the process where you suck the seafoam into the intake via a vacuum line, in which case some would get onto the valves. But honestly, that carbon is so caked on that nothing will get it off other than walnut blasting or equivalent.

So pour all the SeaFoam you want in it as it's only 10 bucks and takes fifteen seconds, but it's a waste of money and time |

By using Seafoam, you'd waste $10 and 15 seconds of your life. It will do nothing for your valves since fuel never sees them. That's the entire reason there is even buildup, no fuel is sprayed over the valves. Maybe it will help your injectors, but you're probably better off getting a dedicated fuel treatment.
Seafoam isn't magic, it's not any different than any of the other additive. It was created for outboard motors to clean up varnish. It's just marketed well, but there isn't anything special about Seafoam. It's biggest ingredient is very lightweight oil, then a solvent, then alcohol, that's pretty much it. People just think it works because when they suck it into the intake, their cars start running badly and blowing smoke out the exhaust. Somehow people equate that with deposits being burned off. It's mostly just the Seafoam burning; it's mostly oil and solvent so it's going to smoke. Pour some oil into your intake, I bet the car will start running rough and blowing smoke too. |
