I find myself half amused/half outraged at the asking prices I see on here for used parts. $1300 for a used MFactory LSD (*plus* pumpkin!)??

Perhaps this is a truly untapped market and I am just a moron (ok, fair, I am a moron). I don't know. So set me straight here: are asking prices for used parts just stupid high, or is this what old sh#t sells for?

Some people ask far more than what the used part is worth (i.e. $40 less than what you can get it new, even though it has been on the car for thousands of miles). All you can do is make a counter-offer for what you are willing to pay and see what they say. People can ask whatever they want, and if someone buys it for that price, then so be it.

+1

Like fine art, Chinese porcelain and Beanie Babies, used BMW parts are worth what someone will pay. Capitalism at its finest.

it is self correcting, you charge what the market will bear. if it is too much, the buyer will shop elsewhere. invisible hand at work.

I've made money selling some of my used parts plenty of times, but then, I tend to be fair with my prices.

I have an excellent customer service record, which is often a good part of the transaction experience, and have a flawless itrader feedback record.

You guys are admirably mellow and fair-minded. Makes me feel even older and grumpier.

So I got a Pro Clip iPhone 5S phone holder, like new, first $50 takes it.

On the same note, some people are just cheap. Depending on transmission and if it's bolted or welded, that diff brand new could be worth over 2 grand, so $1,300 might be a good deal depending on the setup. Just because someone put something up for sale, that doesn't mean you have to buy it. Just looking on both sides of the glass instead of looking through it.

Lol OP I agree with you. A lot of FS threads have insane asking prices for very used parts, yet only 10-15% off new MSRP. Makes zero sense, but the market corrects itself.

If you're asking crazy prices, you'll be sitting on those parts for a long time. Price them aggressively and they'll fly off your shelf (ie. Taran.J)

PS. I saw the post about the used MFactory LSD. That was hardly a couple hundred bucks off brand new. :

Bottom line is, if you don't want to pay the asking price; either make a counter offer or don't buy it. Pissing and moaning about it just shows a lack of maturity. This is how capitalism works. The price of an object is dictated by the market.

I've been looking for a couple items and find some of the prices laughable. Hasn't stopped me from making a realistic offer - whether the person takes the offer or not is up to them.

I will pay up to 50% of new part cost for a used part. No more.

The dumbest used part pricing I have seen lately is for used folding exterior mirrors. Average BIN on Ebay is MORE than buying it new from dealer (assembly less glass). Go figure.

Glad to see this post! Just came from FS section. Some of the asking price did made me outraged. $150 for ONE M3 rep sideskirt while you can get a PAIR for even less than that from ebay. WTF...

While I do agree with this, you have to keep in mind that whatever you list it at, even if it's already a very fair and reasonable price, you will get relentlessly lowballed. For example- I was selling a set of spacers on here for $70 plus shipping, I think they had cost me $120 new, so a pretty decent deal. I'd get people PMing to ask all kinds of redundant questions, and then offer $35 shipped. People are, as a general rule of thumb, cheap as shit.
