Random "Engine Malfunction"

Hey guys, so I was driving on the freeway on my home from work and all of sudden my check engine light turned on and my iDrive said "Engine Malfunction, Power reduced"

Right away I called my mechanic and he said if the car isn't making any weird sounds, don't worry about it and for me to bring it in Monday so he can run codes.

Any idea on what this could be? Should I still drive it but be cautious?

Thanks!

I wouldn't drive it at all until he looks at it. Why risk it?

So, I didn't drive the car until today. Turned on the car, no check engine light... drove to my mechanic's, still nothing... He scanned the car... no codes.
Weird

maybe he doesn't have the right diagnostic equipment to pull the bmw codes from the modules.

he may just be reading the general OBDII P-codes and seeing nothing.

Good point... what diagnostic equipment does he need?

Weird
INPA has 3 different error history sections for the motor, i believe F3 will show the long running list of errors. When errors are cleared, its usually from the F1 list.

It also could be the case of the car sensed a misfire because of a failing coil... But after the restart it cleared the code cuz it no longer "sensed" the issue. Do a nice little WOT just before showing up at the mechanic and if u get the error... Leave the motor running till they pull the codes.
