I just signed up for Hooked On Driving's HPDE at New Jersey Motorsports Park's Lightning racetrack on June 19. It would be cool if some other forum members represented! Anybody down for some hot laps?

BTW, Hooked on Driving puts on a pretty nice events. They provide food, drinks, etc.. Plus Corvette sponsors their program, so if time allows you can take a Vette out on the track for a few laps!

Very tempting... I read the details, and the logistics seem pretty similar to how the BMW events are run... 2 hours of track time per day (so, presumably 4 sessions of about 30 minutes each), point-by passing, run groups broken up by skill/experience, etc. Seems like the more advanced run groups don't give you a dedicated instructor though, which makes the $315 fee seem a bit steep for one day at NJMP.
Can anyone who's done an HOD event compare it to a BMW-run event in terms of instructor quality and how well the event is run in general?

I've attended a HOD event and was very impressed, but I have zero experience with BMWCCA events or HOD's instructors.
FYI, you can have an instructor with you in the Intermediate or Advanced classes if you want; it just isn't required.

So you didn't have an instructor at all?

I'll ask a couple of my friends who are instructors with BMW CCA and other clubs what they know about the HOD instructors...

Only the Beginner class requires an instructor. Advanced and Intermediate class participants can choose to have an instructor ride along if they would like the coaching.

Last time with HOD was my first chance to take my 335 on the track, so I was experimenting and getting to know the new car. I wanted to be alone.

To be forthcoming; a good instructor would absolutely help me get around Lightning in less time. I don't have a lot of laps on that track so my line can benefit from someone with more experience helping me tweak it a bit. I may ask one of the instructors to ride along during my second session this time.

A good instructor will do a lot more for you than just improve your line : )

I hear ya DVC, and i'm not arguing against your point... But these days I'm not usually going to the track for the instruction.

$250 is about my limit for a single day event. I don't need an instructor as I instruct at some events I attend. If it's a new ( to me ) track then I'd like to follow someone who has been there multiple times but again I don't need an instructor.

But yeah, Lightning is FUN!!

Lightning is a FUN track. Easy to learn and has some cool technical aspects to it.

Car ran strong last week. Interestingly It was a small challenge to put power down. Although I had no issues last year, this time I was having to manage against wheel spin from my inside wheel while exiting the tight left handers. I have added Dinan Shockware... Maybe that changed the dynamic weighting? In any event... Now I am strongly considering a LSD.

An LSD is a big step (investment) if you only use your car occasionally on the track but I understand where you come from. I would be surprised if the Shockware would have a negative impact but I may be wrong. Maybe you are getting more confident/faster with the 335i on this track and reaching the limits of the car?

You may be right. Shockware definitely improved how the car gets around the track. This change enabled me to improve how I enter/exit corners a bit. I looked over detailed log data and I'm probably just breaking loose because I can apply more throttle, sooner on exit.... Plus I have higher corner speeds than pre-Shockware.
Today I got a big promotion that lowers the amount of driving I have to do. I may just put some Dinan springs and bump stops and see what happens before I dump on an LSD.

Congrats! Some good (promotion) and some bad though (less driving)
