sticky brake pedel
Does anyone else notice that the brake pedal sticks up at the top if very lightly pressed on after driving for a while?
My car is in service right now and I took a long drive with service foreman in which he could "sort of feel it". To me it's more noticeable, sort of like the feeling of a magnet breaking loose. If it sticks and then I lightly press again on the pedal right away, it's silky smooth (not sticky). But after driving a short distance, I will feel that light resistance and breakaway again. I hope they can resolve this. Chris |

Just got word back from service department that "this is normal".
The 328 loaner they gave me sure had a silky smooth brake pedal. That was the only part of the 328 that I liked more than my M3 Chris |

I'm starting to think this is a mechanical stickiness vs some sort of vacuum.
In the morning, when I start the car, it sticks the first time I press it in too. Anyone have any ideas? I'd really like to get rid of this annoyance. Chris |

I've noticed it myself. I personally find the first 1/2" of brake pedal travel to be too soft. I suspect it was engineered this way to provide smoother application but I lick super touchy, super firm brake pedals

Anyone have a solution for this randomly "clicky" brake pedal when pressing down on it after driving a while? Also happens in the morning every day when starting up. I can feel the pedal "click" down. IS THIS NORMAL?
I have the cover removed from the pedal area now so I can see up there and have been trying to figure out where the stickiness comes from, but it's a mystery. |

Thanks for chiming in!
Each day I crawl under the pedals and try to figure out why it's clicking in the morning before starting the car. I'm assuming this click is related to the random one that happens when driving. I've moves some parts around but it's just no apparent what could be causing this |

I don't think it's the brake lamp switch because it seems to be non-contact some sort of capacitive sensor switch.
The medium duty spring on the brake pedal mechanism doesn't seem to be causing the stickiness either. Removed it and still having the problem. Not sure what that spring even does? Rod and linkage that goes into cylinder? is loose, but no way to tighten it. Not sure if that's it, or if it's in the cylinder? |

OK, I fixed this!
F u Crevier BMW. F u Irvine BMW. F u BMW NA. Sort of in that order. With that said... I'd been thinking this over for a very long time. I actually purchased a used brake pedal assembly to better see what's going on with the pedal linkage. (No need to remove brake pedal from car) Being at home during this Covid time, I've been working on my cars and finally decided to try something on the brake pedal I've been mulling over in my head. I pulled the trim cover off the pedal area *again* and looking at that, in combination with analyzing the eBay pedal assembly I found this: When you let off the brake pedal, the return spring pulls the rod coming thru the firewall all the way back until it stops. However, there is some slop in the linkages, so the after the rod is fully back, the return spring actually pulls the pedal back just a tiny bit more! Now if for any reason, the rod gets sticky after driving around for a while, when you I press on the brake pedal, it moves about 1/16" to take up the slop before actually pressing on the rod. That's the clicking sensation - a slight pedal movement before a click to get the rod moving. So, what I've been wanting to try, is to take up this slop. Get rid of that pre-movement and just start off up against the rod. Using the eBay assembly, I fabricated a high precision spacer. OK, no I didn't, I cut a piece of wood I had in my garage and put some felt on it for good measures. I did measure my car's pedal position with some digital calipers to find out where it was sitting when not depressed. Using that measurement, I added a little thickness to take up that "slop". Before, my F80's brake pedal will ALWAYS click very noticeably in the morning one time when starting the car cold. Always. (Subsequent presses are silky smooth) While driving, it would randomly click every 1-5 minutes or so. I was never able to figure out how to force it to click. Car has 40K miles on it now. I press fit the wood block into the brake pedal channel. First morning, no click! Test drive no click! It hasn't clicked since. In fact, brake pedal feels better than ever beyond the no clicking, not totally sure why. Here's some pics. YMMV on measurements. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xbshwkox7...mGxwvk3ja?dl=0 Audihere Last edited by audihere; 06-24-2022 at 03:47 PM.. |

Hi,
I read that you solved the brake pedal problem. But don't your brake lights always come on with such a wooden block in between? I have an F30 LCI 320i with also an annoying brake pedal. Every time I don't brake for a while I feel a resistance at the beginning of the pedal. Brake shortly afterwards and all is well. After a while back the same resistance. Thanks in advance! Hi Greg, I just replied to your PM. Brake light switch is a simple ratcheting adjustment after the fix is in.
Yes, this COMPLETELY FIXED the sticky feeling in my M3 brake pedad that BMW could not figure out for the life of them. Looking at my post, it's been over 1 year and I have not had one single click of the brake pedal ever since fixing it! |

@audihere:
You are a HERO!!! I am so glad you made a topic about this. I did exactly the same as you did and NO RESISTANCE anymore!!! Maybe a whole new brake pedal will fix this too? Greg Last edited by BMW 130i Greg; 07-14-2021 at 09:13 PM.. |
