Totally off-topic: anybody else read Jack Reacher novels?

Great page turning thrillers!

However I've just about finished the most recent one and haven't read anything else for all 18 books or whatever there is in the series... No idea what to read next!

Open to suggestions from anyone who likes them too?

Have you seen the film 'Jack Reacher' starring Tom Cruise? Great film. It's on Netflix.

Yes, seen it. It's an ok film if you like Tom. I enjoyed it but he wasn't Jack Reacher as in the books!

Yes, Reacher is described as a 6 foot 5 man mountain and Tom Cruise is just about as opposite to this as it's possible to be. I've only read the first one but I enjoyed it.

I also like Dan Brown's books. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series was pretty good and you can't go wrong with a good Stephen King book

I am reading them all now, on no 8 or 9 I think.

Try David Baldacci, better than Lee Child in my opinion!

Ok will have a look at him. Wish I was on 8 or 9... It was much easier when I knew my next book was going to be the next one!

I've not read any of the Jack Reacher books myself (I'm to be found browsing mostly over on the crime and mystery shelves) but, having read the run down on the sorts of plots and back story of the JR novels, I wondered if you might like the Jack Ryan series of Tom Clancy novels...

They can seem a bit dated now (especially if you don't recall the political map pre about 1989) but they are well worth exploring... do a bit of research and read them in order, is my tip... either the order of publication or the chronological order (as some of the books set back to earlier times)... IMO, the series peaked at "Executive Orders"... The next book was not as good but there was a slight reprieve with "The Bear and the Dragon"... "Cardinal of the Kremlin" was a favourite of mine...

The Ryan books are not similar in back story and plot to Jack Reacher, but they are a series and the sorts of characters in them might appeal to you...

At least it looks like he writes one a year, so the wait isn't too long... I waited 8 and 5 years (respectively) for the last two James Ellroy novels... The last one is the first of 4... so I guess I'm going to be reading him into my dotage..

Cheers Dave- read most of them back in uni! I might re read the one about the non-nuclear war with Russia... Forgot the title now, but seems more relevant these days!

Red storm rising... His first or second book, iirc.

I believe it came out of wargaming, where he and his pals would game out scenarios for an invasion... The book was an attempt to show how a soviet invasion into Europe might progress and how NATO might overcome it... One of my favourite books of his... It starts with the soviets having a big problem with an oil refinery... They invade Europe actually as a sandbagging exercise to divert attention from the true plan, which is to push into the gulf and take the oil...

Ian rankin - rebus books are good
Have you tried the game of thrones books - there good
Michael Connelly - Lincoln lawyer and the detective books are good.
Pillars of the earth by Ken follet is good too, it's graphic and long, but I couldn't put it down

Game of Thrones books are brilliant IMO, even better than the TV series which is also excellent. It's an unfinished series though which is very frustrating for the impatient reader. Another awesome series (also unfinished) is The Name of the Wind series by Patrick Rothfuss; breathtaking creativity totally unputdownable.

I might need to get my coat, but Jeffrey Archer's books are great; oldies but goodies. I'm looking for some new books for my iPad now so enjoying these recommendations

I've read the Jack Reacher books, not bad but all very similar. Checking out the crime/action section of my bookshelf I'd recommend giving these guys a try as well:
Robert Crais - The Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novels
George Pelecanos - any of his books are good
Joe R Lansdale - The Hap and Leonard novels
Barry Eisler - The John Rain novels
Don Winslow
James Ellroy
Elmore Leonard
Robert B Parker - The Spenser novels

I've read a few rebus novels and actually have all of them, so might go back to them.

Game of thrones doesn't appeal to me at all- wife read a few but I've too short an attention span for the scale of it all. I like that the reacher ones are self contained and I can blast through them in a few days.

I like the similarity- I know exactly what I'm going to get!

Cheers for the suggestions though, will have a look at some of those
