Questions about muffler delete, aftermarket exhaust, exhaust flap, codes…etc.
Hi fellow 2ers
I’m thinking of doing muffler delete, but I want to hear it first before committing to it. The Plan: Take the muffler off and see how it sounds and to see if I like it. There is a video or two of muffler delete but I need to hear it in person. The Problem: Removing the exhaust means no more muffler flap and Im worried it will throw a code. I have searched and found some people got caught by the dealer when doing the golf tee mod. My main concern is that there will be no codes thrown. Those who went muffler delete route or aftermarket exhaust, how did you deal with exhaust flap and what did you do? How about m235 muffler? I believe it will fit, which has a flap, therefore, no codes? If still no good, I might have to purchase and gut the OEM muffler with the flap intact. The wait for the 228 m performance exhaust is too long and who knows if it will happen. Thanks for any suggestions. Roman |

I can say that the M235i system will bolt up without any problem other than the rear valance....which is an easy fix as you can buy the M235i one for fairly short money.
In regards to removing the exhaust flap and getting a "code", it won't happen. The exhaust flap works on vacuum. It's easy enough to remove the system and plug the vacuum line......no codes. |

I would think that the sound would be similar to the M235. I don't think it would be a huge difference from engine to another.....likely different, but not WAY different.

I am speaking from experience as I have done the muffler delete along with a million other mods. When unplugging the exhaust valve the check engine light won't come on the dash but if you run the codes with a BMW code scanner then you will get a code for "exhaust flap malfunction" nothing to worry about but just thought I'd let you guys know.

The 'better' sound is of course subjective, but a rear muffler is not going to change the sound that the engine itself produces. Installing an exhaust meant for the N55 is not going to make the N20 sound like an N55, no matter how much I wish that were the case. I've heard a F30 335 and 328 accelerate past me one after another, both with modified exhausts, and I can assure you that they sound nothing alike. The M235 MPE sounds fine on a 228, but it doesn't sound like a M235. I have a M135 stock exhaust on my 220 and that doesn't make it sound like a M135/235

I use a stock M135 muffler on my 220 - needed slight modification, mainly to the exhaust tips (as well as the midpipe being a different diameter), so I assume a M235 exhaust would need even less modifying
