Dashcam installation

I am considering buying a camera for the front and back windows and am looking at this brand called "BlackVue".

From what i researched, it's a korean company with good build quality reputation although a bit expensive. "DR 650GW 2CH" is the designation of the particular model i intend to buy but have not been able to get all the answers i need.

Firstly, if i plug the camera into the normal cigarette lighter port in my 328i, will the camera turn off cause of the ASS function of the car? For example, i stop at a red light and the ASS function turns off my engine, will the camera keep running or just automatically turn off?

Second, this "BlackVue Car Black-Box Power Magic Pro", is described as follows "Power magic is a device that supplies power to BlackVue from the car's battery according to the configured voltage or configured timer to prevent the vehicle battery from being discharged."

Specifications
Rated Output Voltage 12-24V DC
Output current Rated current 1A, max 2A
Output voltage cut-off 11.6~11.8V (±0.05V)
22.8~23.2V (±0.1V)
on the basis of the input
Output voltage restoration 11.7~11.9V (±0.05V)
22.9~23.3V (±0.1V)
on the basis of the input
Output Voltage Cutoff Timer 1 ~ 72 hrs

PRODUCT features
· Multi-booting
· Prevention to discharge Vehicle Battery
· Prevention to Reboot Black box/Navigation
· Configuring the Voltage to Cut-off the Power
· Configuring the Timer to Cut-off the Power
· Timer setting : 6hrs ~ Infinity
· Semi-permanent fuse usage
· Cigar jack connection socket
· For 12-24V

Will it cause any problems if i use this "power magic pro" to directly connect my car's battery? How difficult is it to DIY? Or just stick to using the lighter port?

Hope someone with experience using these devices can provide their input

Thank you

Due to complexity of the electrics if you want to connect magic pro then direct connection to battery is recommended. Difficulty is getting the wiring all the way from battery in back to camera in front.

I use the power supply which is underneath the dash in the passenger side. Works fine, just won't be able to use magi pro that's all. Will shut down approx 15 mins after turning off car.

Ass will not affect the camera.

so i have a 2014 335i and wired the DR550GW-2CH in myself. i use power magic pro and left the default settings (6hrs or 12v) and had no issues so far. the power magic pro is wired between the wireless module and the fusebox in the trunk/boot, and all wires that come with the device are long enough to reach everything you need. i'll post pics of my install tomorrow if you'd like.

I also have the drg550-2ch with power magic. ran the wires along headliner, into the trunk and to the fuse box. Used fuse 162 for the live wire.

I have just bought one a Blackvue DR600 which I plan just plugging into the plug underneath the glove box for now but I would like a more permanent always on solution.

Are there are drawbacks to connecting the Power Magic straight to the battery in the boot? aside from running the cable back there, I'm concerned about voiding my warranty as the car is only a week old.

Did you say the power supply only lasts 15mins? May I ask why you even bothered getting a power pack if this is the case.

Not sure if I understand your question 100%.

I had the Blackvue and Magic pro installed in my previous 135i. Much easier than the F30. As well as fuse box being in front I could tap the fuse directly ie there was one which was always on and another which is switched.

The f30 fuse box is in the back and I don't know if there is a fuse which is always on.

Besides I couldn't be bothered running cables all the way to the trunk and so just used the power supply under the glove box.

However, when you turn off the car the power to this cigarette lighter will cut after 15 mins

the existing fuse tap should be switched/acc 12v, and the other should go directly to the battery (using a fuse inbetween) for your constant 12v. when the power magic pro sees the ACC 12v go away, it pulls from the auctioneered constant 12v until it detects =<12v or has exceeded 6hours (defaults)

I'm not an engineer per se but I know that the fuse needs to be within 1 foot from the battery terminal. This is to avoid a fire in case the wire is pinched in an accident. Not trying to flame, just letting you know about a potential safety hazard.

yeah, that's fine. 2ft doesn't make a difference vs 1ft IMHO. if the OP wants to keep to 1ft, that's up to him/her, but i personally don't care

Does anyone else find the default setting of 12v a bit too low?

Ie a healthy battery is actually > 12.3/4 volts

If allowed to fall below 12v then the battery has actually reached <20% state of charge which is not good!

you can avoid going to the battery by going into the fuse box under the trunk floor, much cleaner install

never had an issue here. even if, you can't change it until you get to the 24v tier:
