M2 front end design examined closer - I think I'm on to something. Check it out.
So, as you have definitely seen by now, many believe the front end design of the most recent renderings have been too "busy". I do see what those are talking about, but I still love the design.
However, I have been looking at front end photos analytically and I think I've determined an error in the way bimmerpost has been rendering the front bumper design. Follow along: Lets begin with looking at 2 current renders that show the front bumper well and in the same way: one is from a couple weeks ago, the other is from Christmas Day. In the blue Image, you can see I have designated two character lines. "1" is the line from the corner of the headlight that extends bellow the headlight and toward the grills, and "2" is the line that goes just over the uppoer intake fin. Now. From these images, we see that lines 1 and 2 are being rendered very far away from each other. Line 2 is *barely* above the intake fin, and line 1 seems to be floating without cohesiveness. Now, lets take a look at the gran turismo styling. It has been confirmed that the BMW M2 will take many styling cues from this car. I have highlighted the character lines... but notice that there is only 1! Lets take a zoomed in look on the prototype that was testing around the 'ring, and see what the deal is. On the image with the BLACK and YELLOW lines, I have highlighted what I believe is the issue. The camo is creating the *illusion of a character line #2* when in reality, it's just because the camo *extends over part of the intake!* In the next image, I highlight the sole character line number 1, and point out how the camo covers part of the intake, which *hides the fact that there is no character line #2, which would be in accord with the tursimo concept!* In this form, the bumper is *much* less congested, and honestly, it flows better with the bottom of the headlight. Call me crazy, but keep looking at the gran tursimo concept, then at the 'ring images. It's all starting to look really clear. The character line that flows beneath the headlight is the same line that flows to the bottom of the bumper. Character line 1 and 2 are the same line! For those of you hoping for a less congested bumper, this is your answer. Perhaps one of the mods has any input on this, but I feel very confident with my analysis. Only time will tell. Whatever it turns out to be.... Go BMW!!!!!!!! Hence why the single design line is so high up on the bumper, even in the spy shots!!! I think I've struck gold, boys!!
Character line 1 and 2 are actually the same line!!!! And in the last image, ignore that skinny grey line. That's where line #1 USED to flow towards, but we can see in the spots that that line does indeed flow to the bottom of the bumper! It will actually be less prominent there, like in the GranTurismo Vision car!! I really think I've cracked something here. Really do. Last edited by Adem1534; 12-27-2014 at 02:35 PM.. |

I agree. Scott posted a sketch that he said was a "guide" to the front end and it was in line of what you are saying. I tried to modify the rendering based off of his sketch a couple of weeks ago but I am not good at that kind of stuff. I have searched for his sketch but it looks like he deleted it, unfortunately.

Exactly. And the higher single line not only makes the front bumper less busy, it increases the apparent size of the intake - it makes it look more powerful.

I completely agree and have also thought the same thing as you since the beginning. Between Scott's sketch and the GT concept, it's more or less exactly what you say. And for the better too I think

I agree the GT concept kooks better but it does have more lines? On the blue you're highlighting stuff in the air intakes but on the GT concept now?
Great attention to detail thought OP.....this level of analysis shows how starved of M2 info we are!!

Right on. I think the render posted a few weeks back is more accurate than the Xmas day one. The old one looks less busy, but not quite there yet. My educated guess is that the air vents will be larger and perhaps a little more curved/angular. The middle section/slab has to be somewhat big enough to mount a euro plate on (but not as big or flat/angular like the Xmas day photo shows).
The more important question is: how do I go about getting a job at BMW? Willing to stat at the bottom. Lol |

Well that line you drew is actually the third, unnamed line that I drew in the first image. The line that isn't there in the GT Vision car is the one that extends over the edge, creating a lip. Yeah, without much new info its all about picking apart what we already have in greater detail.

It's so obvious now that you've pointed it out, you can visibly see the lines of the larger air intakes if you focus on the camo, it's worked in the way that it creates an optical illusion.. But you have foiled their plans

I hope that the bumper is less busy than some of the renders - nice analysis.

Can someone PS a new render taking cues from this thread and also the current M4? The way I see it, the 4 Msport and 2 Msport look similar in the front so the M models have got to look similar as well. If we combine the styling cues from the M4 I believe we will come very close to the final product.

Hood will have the shut line higher up the bonnet but yes pretty much like this beast hopefully, all win! I love it in the White Red and Blue in Gran Turismo 6.
