Manual to Automatic shifting. How?
Finally I got my i8! (With Laser lights!!)
Exceptional vehicle, but I got a question for other users: what do I have to do, in Sport mode, to revert the gear selection from manual mode (i.e. paddles), to the usual automatic mode? Right now I'm switching to Comfort and then back to Sport, but from a user interface point of view that looks inelegant and I doubt that's the proper way of going back to automatic shifting. Thanks! |

The i8 follows BMW tradition. Flick the gear shift lever to the right and then back to the left and you "re-set" the sport mode to shift automatically.

I was wondering the same but there seems no way to do so.
Normally I wouldn't mind shifting back and forth from Sport mode but in the city that means that the engine will shutdown or at least that the drive program will change for a sec. I'm sure it doesn't do the car any harm but it doesn't feel right . Congrats on the laser lights, does that mean that Germany started delivering MY 2015 cars? How did you order them, afaik they weren't on the option lists until now? |

You guys are funny. You ask how to do something. You're told. And you can't believe it because "it doesn't feel right."
On the other hand, where I come from people would say "thank you." OK.

The problem is that at city speeds, in the i8 the combustion engine will stop and then restart, and very often the gearbox will upshift (sport->comfort) then downshift (comfort->sport). A lot of activity for nothing! |

MalibuBimmer; I don't know where the hostile reactions come from since I was only expressing my feelings about the way BMW (seemingly) wants us to change between manual and automatic when in sport mode.
I know the current procedure but thanks for pointing it out! |

Those of us who've driven SMG, DCT and Steptronic (auto) transmissions have been saddled for years with having to flick the shift lever right and then left to "clear" the manual function. It's a well known "feature" of BMWs. If you flick it quickly enough your engine shouldn't shut off. Maybe it shouldn't be that way, but it has been for a long long time.

AMG makes it easy, you just hold the "up" paddle and it goes back into auto. The past three I've owned (2008-2012) have worked that way. Wish the i8 did it.

Can you tell a bit more, what kind of like tech docs you have? Factory docs in German..? Or perhaps something in English also?

I made a concerted effort to try to figure out what the problem was that people were having flicking the gear shift lever to the right and then back to the left. I was particularly interested in seeing if the maneuver would cause the engine to turn off and then turn on again.
I can report that as long as the driver quickly flicks the shift lever right and then back left, the engine (at least in my i8) does not turn off and then restart. The speed of the "flick" is pretty much the same as that in my 9 other BMWs that I have owned since 2006. So I can't for the life of me figure out why there seems to be a concern about resetting the automatic sport shift in this way. It's a puzzle.
