Black Alloys
Good evening everyone,
I am thinking of buying a Golf R. I have found a finance deal and it is just TOO GOOD TO IGNORE AND ETC ETC BUT I STILL LOVE MY F30 BECAUSE SOMETHING SOMETHING...oh god wait no that was a nightmare I had. In other more forum appropriate news I am getting another car. Don't ask why other than "circumstances change". The scumbags at Barons are of course being their usual myopic selves but the car I want/spec I want doesn't come along very often. Anyway - I have a question for this, the BMW forum. 1) Black car black alloys - look cool or like Darth Vader's cock? 2) "painted black" alloys by dealer v.s. factory ordered black. Apparently no obvious difference in quality - but are they in fact two different things - i.e. is the black "baked in" to the alloy at the factory rather than "dipped" by the dealer. Any guidance much appreciated. Any threads about the Golf R less so. |

Not a fan of black alloys myself, but that's just my opinion.
With regards to the finish, factory alloys will always be more durable and better finished that painted alloys by a dealer. That said, it would depend who the dealer got to do the work.

Lurker hehehe
Anyways I will resist biting. Black alloys important to get done at a top class place. I found somewhere local that's very good and if my next wheels weren't black I would have kept factory wheels then had then coated there. Expect to pay £400-£500 maybe a set but often that can be less than the official upgrade cost. Best bit is getting to pick the exact colour, gloss black, gun metal, matt black, 2 tone etc. I found my place via my dealers recommendation (they themselves could not repair M Perf alloy rims and put me in touch). Good luck, I'm a black 2 tone rims guy myself.

I can't fathom black wheels out at times. Some cars they look great, others not so much. Very hard to tell in pics as well so only tend to judge these in the flesh.
I think black on black would be too much for me, but bi-coloured black and metal would be good, and the route I will go down if I ever replace the 403M wheels. What are you going for?

Quite like black alloys, however I think gloss black looks a bit odd against the tyres, dirty tyres seem to stand out more, probably prefer the gun metal/matt black finish.

Saw my car with gloss black wheels and it looked terrible! Some cars/wheels do look great though.
I quite like the gunmetal colour on the M135i's... |

Personally I think black on black might be too much. Have you got the car if so try painting a rim with water soluble black paint. If you like the look excellent !! If not wash off and move on!!
You could also consider powder coating- I believe this is more durable. |

Dark car, light wheels.
Light car, dark wheels. IMO. Proper shiny black wheels need to be kept very clean, waxed and free of brake dust or they'll lose their finish so I would only go for this option if I was a cleaning fanatic. |

There is a black on back E92 near me, it looks smart. However, I wouldn't want it...
To me black wheels need too much maintenance. And, I'm a car cleaning and waxing person... As above, they look great when cleaned, protected and the tyres are freshly glossed. Otherwise, you can move towards the ancient Rover 200 that's lost its wheel trims and has black steel wheels on show... Somebody else just got the M Performance wheels, in black (or ferric) with the machined faces. That worked.

Anthracite is a better compromise and works well with both light and dark coloured cars IMO.
Black wheels are too much and rarely look good other than on a freshly cleaned car. |

I never really think its the black alloys that are a problem, even if a little dirty. problem is hwne you have black alloys and the tyre walls look grey from being old/dirty. Looks poor then...but looks fantastic with tyre wall dressing like a showroom car. Megeurs do a great kit with applicator for this.

That's a good configurator, EB works ok with most wheels except ones that are pure black to my eyes and tastes. Those X5 wheels are very nice, and bi-colour is the in thing too.

Yep, Tanzanite Blue. Rubbish actual picture attached. British weather and me have not aligned for good outdoor shots and it's now filthy as I've done 600 miles of fun A roads since it's running in service.
And no, I've no idea how to get that bloody leaf out of the radiator, need to get myself one of those thin grabber things! |
