Auto-dimming mirror install after purchase??

I have been looking into getting a new 228i with sport package and lighting package (got to love those upgraded headlights). As I am on a budget, I am trying to avoid the more luxurious stuff which won't benefit the way the car drives. I can live without power seats and leather and all the other stuff in the premium package but really like an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Does anyone know if they can be installed after the fact either by me or the dealership. I would spend a few hundred bucks to get it but don't want to spend the 4k for the rest of the premium package I can live without. BTW first post on these forums but have read through quite a lot of threads and like all the great content people are making available.

Just so you have an idea, I had dimming side and rear-view mirrors on my Mercedes C-class and thought I couldn't live without it on my 2-series, but I don't miss it one bit.
I decided to forgo the anti-dazzle when on my Mercedes just the replacement side mirror/glass part was way over $300 maybe close to $500 or more.

Thanks for the info. My current BMW has the auto-dimming review mirror and even tonight when coming home sitting in traffic I had some huge truck behind me with all his lights on and it made it a pain to see. Maybe the lines and smaller back window help so the 228 isn't so bad.

I don't know if BMW has changed its tune, but ever since the auto-dimming rear view mirror was introduced on the E46 BMW has packaged it with the premium package and it was not possible to add it as a separate item. I know because I asked my tech the same question before I even bought the car and the answer was "you want the mirror, have to get the premium package".

I agree it's totally ridiculous that BMW mixes what I consider a $200 safety item in with a $4000 luxo-package, but you can thank the marketing and accounting dipshits at BMW because that's how they sell you more crap you don't need.

I don't see why you would not be able to add it. Worst case you will need to run power and ground to the mirror, if the wiring is not already there. I added an auto-dim mirror to my Saab 9-5 back in the day.

For me, I don't care about the auto-dimming, I can turn the clown nose just fine if needed, though I do really like the SIDE auto-dimming. But I want the Homelink garage door opener.

I want to swap the auto dimming mirror out for a manual. When there is sunlight behind the car blinding me I can't dim the mirror and the auto dim doesn't detect the light to dim. It would have been nice to have an override button to manually dim the mirror.
I am sure you can buy the auto dim mirror from the parts dept and pretty sure the power wiring is already there just not being used in the plug.

If anyone knows the part number that would be great. Its just one of the little things about having a auto dim mirror that I miss. Let me know if you are planning to sell off your autodim bman6074

I most likely won't sell my dimming mirror as i want to keep the other features like the garage door buttons but just want a manual mirror in the case. My plan is to dismantle the case and swap the mirror itself out.

So does anyone have info on this mirror being swapped into the car? My car is fully loaded except premium...so I don't have the mirrors that dim and I really need them as the cars behind me are blinding me at night.

Reviving an old thread, maybe by now someone has a good answer.
If anyone has details on how to add an auto dimming rear view mirror, including part numbers and procedure, please respond.
We are also looking to add the garage door opener and alarm to our 228i, which I'm sure is related to the rear view mirror hardware as well.

I have not been able to find a simple plug and play solution to this, either. I think I can determine the correct mirror and part no., but I can't verify that the existing wiring harness to the rain sensor, alarm LED, and map lights will get the mirror function.
