Shortage of Oil Filters!

I took my car in this morning for the scheduled 1200 mile service and my SA comes out and tells me that they don't have any oil filters in stock and he says the parts department is saying they are backordered worldwide! How can that be? They found some at the BMW PC so they gave me a loaner and are sending someone up to the PC today to get one and bring it back. How crazy is that? You would think BMW would plan better to have a supply of common consumables for this car.

So I go to Turner's website and it says the oil filter used in the F80 M3 is the same that is used in all these cars. I think the dealership is completely wrong ...

I took my M3 for service last week. Interestingly enough the dealer did not
stock the "correct" oil filter. A two hour maintenance took two days since the part had to be overnighted from out of state. The filter part # is 11427854445. My dealer confirmed with BMWNA and AG. The oil should be BMW long life 5W-30.

It is a new vehicle so I cut them some slack, but I agree with you. The service manager and I had a fruitful discussion, and he forwarded the info to the sister dealership to stock these disposables. I am glad I could be "process/quality control" for them.

I thought that was the case...the dealer indicated to me that the S55 uses the filter as stated in my reply earlier.

I can confirm that the oil filter socket is the same as used on the N54/N55, so I would assume it uses the same oil filter.

I will tell you though that my dealership had a specific break-in service KIT that was pre-packaged by BMW or at least the dealership parts service. When the tech got it, he saw that it had:

- Oil filter
- New drain plugs
A few other things I forget (maybe a bottle of additive for the rear diff?)

They drain and change differential fluid and plugs.
I too thought that the filter was the same as the N55. Oh well, car is running well.

I attached my work order.

My SA called me back and confirmed the actual correct part number for the oil filter is what you stated. 11-42-7-854-445

Neither of us has any clue what the difference is but he wants to err on the side of caution and I appreciate that.

If you look up the oil filter, it is a special order item on most BMW part websites. The filter alone costs more than the oil and filter combo that Turner Sports recommends for the F80.

Either way, I agree with the SA/tech performing their due diligence and replacing the filter with the correct part. My initial disappointment with my local dealer transitioned to relief as it seems they were doing the "right thing" for the vehicle.

Enjoy driving...

Oops, did I do something wrong? I have hand washed my car four times in the last four weeks of ownership. I should have told them to hold off...I guess they were "doing me a favor" by cleaning the vehicle. If I have time, I will hand wash the car and apply Wolfgang paint sealant this weekend.

I have committed such sacrilege! I am so ashamed...

I had exactly the same problem here in Germany. Booked the service a week ahead and took the car in at Munich BMW. They said it will take 1 hour, so we left for the center. They call me after 2,5 hours saying that they don't have the part, the oil filter. I was mad and couldn't understand how this is possible! Went to Frankfurt BMW next day and same story there and they told that they are sold out everywhere.. Finally got it done the following week near Kassel and they had to order it as well. This story happened 5 weeks ago..

Nothing facetious or factitious about the thread. This is REALLY happening...it appears that a number of dealerships are ill equipped to perform the 1200 break in service with the correct components. I know...seems silly...I was not laughing when it took two days to perform the job, while I drove a loaner that smelled like an ashtray.

There was a change in oil filter kits due to a oil pan production change from September 2014.

The very common oil filter kit 11 42 7 541 827 used to be the one specified, but a brand new oil pan screw was needed each oil change ( number 4 in picture 1 below). The service staff also had to remember not to use the supplied copper crush gasket in the oil filter kit as it was meant for the non-M cars.

From September 2014 production the oil pan was changed and a normal bolt and copper crush gasket pan screw system was introduced (No 4 and 5 in picture 2 below)
This uses a different copper crush gasket that the non-M cars, so a new oil filter kit was needed 11-42-7-854-445 as the old kit had the wrong crush gasket..

There seems to be a shortage of the new oil filter kit.
I believe the filter itself is still teh same (need to confirm with part numbers on the filter)

Picture 1 is oil pan for F80/F82 till September 2014 and Picture 2 is from September 2014 production.
Note the pan drain screw has changed (No 4 in picture 1 and no 4 and 5 in picture 2).

I believe so, since its shipping weight is still less than the N55 aluminium oil pan, but not the approximately 1,000 grams less the original oil pan was. Seems to be about 250 grams less, so has gained weight.
Just remember shipping weights arn't always perfect.

It still uses the original extended length gasket that's used to keep magnesium and aluminium engine parts away from each other

I would give you a job...you explained the reason for the change. My M3 was a first week production in September. My local dealer was not aware of such change as listed above in the thread. How did you access that second image? I have a PDF file regarding the S55 engine that has the old filter setup.

I need to look under my car and check the oil pan bolt. I had a build prior to Sept ... August I think. So did the new part number come out for all Sept+ build cars and it's backwards compatible with earlier built cars? I would think so otherwise it would be a nightmare to keep up with for the dealers I would think.
