Road Feel
I hear and read about this car having zero road feel through the steering wheel. Is that an accurate statement?
It makes zero sense to me that BMW would eliminate the feel of the road when driving. Should I be worried? |

How many EPS threads are we going to have? We have been beating this to death for the last week already.

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...light=steering Totally agree. I don't have the problem with steering feel. I guess I am just not a good enough driver to notice the problem

What the heck do they mean by road feel?
Is it that vibration that I felt on my e92 steering wheel when going straight? Because I felt vibrations going over rough pavement then it all went away when I changed out the tires for new ones. Is this what they mean by "road feel?" |

BMW has done the best they currently can with EPS. Everyone is going EPS, HPS is in the past, there is no way back. It is what it is and the F8X steering is far better than other BMWs with EPS, progress is being made. Some of us don't like it (EPS) but it's a matter of take it or leave it since no new cars will have HPS.

You would have to be completely paralyzed not to have a feel with this car. Now, Op, go read the sex thread and you'll get the questions we can not answer going in your head.

I just test drove the new m3. The car is very fast and has precise steering. The only concern I have is the responsiveness of the engine but this will only be a problem If you use to previous m3's. I've owned every generation except the original e30 and I'm used to high revving naturally aspirated engines. If your ok with turbos, you will enjoy this car.

A little bit off topic... but does anyone know what rear subrame bolts directly to the car actually means?
I have looked at pictures and cannot figure out the difference between a normal 3 series. The car still has bushings... do they just mean solid bushings instead of rubber? I hope not...

Road feel to me refers to two slightly different concepts.
One is the ability of the car's chassis, tires and steering to communicate the texture of the road surface on which you are driving through the steering wheel. The other is being able to sense the limits of grip going around a corner. Having driven a F82 over a wide range of road surfaces - dry and wet concrete and asphalt, gravel, ice, snow and my own winter street, which at times resembles the surface of the moon - I can say confidently that road feel in the F82 is not as good as it was in my e90 HPS system. That being said, I believe it to be leagues better than other EPS systems I have driven and communicates just enough road feel as a driver needs to drive well. Everything else about the EPS system, however, especially it's ability to, well, steer accurately and precisely as you intend is far superior to anything I have driven before. In short, it is not quite sex without a condom, nor sex with one. It's somewhere in-between that still allows one to be a good lover of the road.

Suspension components are mounted to the subframe with rubber bushings, and the subframe is also mounted to the body with rubber bushings. You can see the bushings clearly in this pic, those coke-can sized things at the left most end, and the two things above the differential. These bushings reduce vibration and add compliance to make the ride and NVH better at the expense of handling precision and drivetrain response. The M3 does not have these large subframe bushings. Also, rubber bushings come in a million different flavors. The M3 and 335i bushings may look the same, but the rubber stiffness or shape of the molded rubber could result in a bushing that performs very different. The M3 and 335i probably have a completely different bushing set up.

Thank you, I appreciate the response. I do understand everything... I must have been looking at some incorrectly tagged images as there were clearly bushings in those. If there are none, then the explanation is clear.

Only reason I can't feel the road is the G force making me light headed from the brutal acceleration and lateral grip.
