Battery/charging issue E93 Convertible

Drove 45 miles, parked and shut engine off and the car was totally dead....no power to anything. Tow truck came and he checked the battery...3.4 volts!! Hooked on his jump pack and all electrical was back and the car started fine. He disconnected his battery pack and the car quit....alternator not charging. Hooked it back up and started the car and moved it about 50 yrds to a clear area so he could hook it up for the tow. At that point, the alternator was charging!! QUESTIONs...how could the battery have discharged that low while driving and show no electrical fault?? Why wasn't the alternator charging at first and then a couple of minutes later charging fine?? Had a new battery installed on warranty 10 months ago after showing "excessive electrical draw" fault at startup ...twice I think....and nothing since. Always lock he car, even in the garage, to make sure everything shuts off immediately. Any ideas??
