What are the downsides of spacers?
I see lots of discussion about folks installing spacers or wheels with great offset. I gather this is primarily for cosmetic reasons, to fill out the wheel wells a bit better and bring the wheels out closer to the edges of the car. No argument that this does improve the looks. Perhaps the widened stance improves cornering a bit as well.
But what are the downsides? If there were none, why wouldn't BMW do this in the base case? And might BMW try to void a suspension-related warranty claim if you install spacers or wheels with greater offset, claiming it put additional stress on the suspension that it was not designed for? I'm very much liking the look of snodgrass23's Estoril Blue M235 with Dinan springs and greater offset wheels and am considering replicating it on mine when it comes in, though I would probably just use spacers with the stock wheels. Thanks. Bob |
