The exhaust note, when putting the car into "Sport" mode, gets noticeably louder both when just cruising and when you're getting on it. I know the car has the Active Sound System but is that ALL coming from that, or does something actually happen with the exhaust (valve opens etc)? Basically, does it sound different from outside the car as well when in Sport vs Comfort?

I always wondered how they get the gargle/blipping in the exhaust from one mode to the other...you would figure since it is exhaust it would be the same all the time based on throttle imput since it is a fixed item and not variable

The gargling comes from left over gas in the exhaust hitting the hot exhaust and essentially exploding, similar to a back fire. I'm guessing they purposely leave the injectors on for slightly longer when the throttle is closed or something like that.

There was a post I march about this. Consensus was there is a small valve that does open in sport mode.

When you change from Comfort to Sport, the characteristic curve of the accelerator pedal and steering wheel are also altered, as is the setting of the optionally available adaptive M running gear. But the engine sound is also varied via the exhaust flap control and the engine application.
