Exclamation [uh-ohh] - Revert to original coding

Soooo I may have a little screwup here and am hoping for some help.

I did some coding but wanted to revert everything back to factory state, so I loaded my car's original FA and loaded original SVT and put my backed up original NCD files in the data folder on my computer.

I activated FA, and then selected the top-level ECU and clicked "code"

Things looked to be going ok until it got to module DME2 after which point I got an error message upon trying to code DME2 and the engine cutoff.

After that Im now getting a check engine error light and also a drivetrain malfunction and a fuel system contin. message.

Any ideas? Can these be cleared ? Can I revert my car back to factory defaults like I tried to do in the beginning?

Sorry for the bother and thanks in advance for any help!

you sure you clicked "code" and not "code defaults" ?
you don't need your ncd's when you use "code" as it will reset it automatically to factory settings...
Also i would code only the ECU's you modified instead of all the ECUs

Does the car run?

E-SYS can remove the fault code.
Click "External Applications" in the left menu.
Click "External Application"
Double-click "Transmitter"
Scroll to the bottom and double-click "... Clear all DTCs ..."

Crisis averted for now thanks to a very good and well-known Samaritan on these boards

I'll admit, I got to coding, got ahead of myself because I was excited and got a little careless. Some lessons I've learned:
  • Make sure you research and know what you're doing. Even when you think you know: double, triple check.
  • You probably don't want to touch the DME2 module
  • If you have to touch DME2, make sure the car is OFF
  • If you want to code defaults, do it individually and not from the top of the tree.

I definitely did not press 'code defaults.' Basically I was trying to just revert everything back to factory so I went to the top level SVT tree and clicked 'Code' which went through each module and re-coded it. What I failed to realize is the DME2 module needs to be coded when the engine is off. Since my engine wasn't off, the coding failed and looks to have corrupted that module's cafd with no way to re-code it (to my knowledge). Not exactly sure how the good samaritan fixed this [he's really fast ;] but it involved resetting the SVT and loading in a different version of the DME2 cafd that matched the i-level (I think something along those lines).

I've been researching how to code for quite some time but I just took delivery of my car about two weeks ago and wasn't able to do much hands-on. I've read these boards countless times, watched videos, and chatted with a few folks. I'm a hardware/software guy by trade, so I thought I knew what I was doing and took it a little too far, too fast and got careless.

Anyway...
Good to know about not needing ncd's for resetting -- assuming you only need the original FA activated then that changes the ncd/cafds, right?

Also good to know about removing fault codes. And yes I agree, only code the ECUs you touch is a solid plan.

This was definitely a stomach-churning scenario and I'm glad I had help here and through a very good and knowledgeable Samaritan!

Yeah, I know the feeling for sure

To be honest, the coding itself is pretty straightforward and it's not difficult, there's just a lot of different things, some wonky folder structure/syntax, and everything being in German doesn't help either The biggest thing is making backups and knowing how the system works.

I played around with ESys a little bit two months before I even got my car to get a feel for it and then I just had a go at it. Pikcachu has a really awesome spreadsheet and info as do others and everyone on this forum and others are always more than willing to help out, pass along info, etc.

I think I'm going to start a common questions / FAQ guide for coding because there's still a ton of things I want to learn for myself and even after a few months of browsing I still can't find some of the answers I'm looking for. Happy to help you as well as I learn more!

My SRS is permanently disabled according to the onscreen message. That and I have 2 DTC that wont go away no matter how many times I clear them. I've already been through transmitter and Tool32 and cleared SRS and DTC codes. I tried FA coding all modules to stock after the SRS error initially popped up and thats when the 2 DTC codes came up.

The ACSM is put into a special fail-safe mode when programming.
You might be able to clear it with one of the more engineering level tools, but I know ISTA/D takes care of it quickly and easily.

However you might have a bigger issue, as those CAF files are clearly wrong.

Corrupted CAFD

Just inject new CAFD into ECU, and VO Code it.

Connect => Read FA (VO) => Activate FA (VO) => Read SVT (VCM) => Left-Click on desired ECU => Click on "Detect CAF for SWE" => Select the CAFD from latest I-Level shown => Select OK => Right-Click on ECU (the ECU itself not the underlying CAFD) => Select CODE.

Unfortunately I've also done the same thing as the OP.

I'm getting all sorts of drivetrain errors, stabilisation warnings, etc.

Can't seem to fix it by loading a new CAFD into DME2... Any ideas??

Edit: I fixed it by following Pikachu's instructions - initially didn't work but the error went away by themselves after I turned the car off!
