Autocrossing

Captain Slow here, had the F80 out to the autocross today for the 2nd time. I still just have not convinced myself to use the brakes the way Herr BMW wants me to, you'll see several examples of me going into a turn way too slow. Just getting off the gas to soon and not using enough brake. I think the instructor that's been helping me beat me by 2 seconds today, my time here was 46.208 or something like that.

Looks like fun! Nice job trimming that much time down. And the corners were still smooth.
I'll be going autoxing next weekend, and fully expect to have much simpler cars beat my times; my only goal will be to improve my own times. I did autox with my old 335 but this is a whole new game. I realize my biggest enemy will be my own ego!

When I started autocrossing with my C6 Corvette, I started out at the bottom. For me, riding with someone who is fast to see how it's supposed to be run helped me a lot more than having an instructor tell me the 100 things I was doing wrong.

I took my car autocrossing at Bremerton Motorsports Park this weekend. The car is completely stock. The track was set up to be all in second gear. We had rain that day, and the real challenge was getting the power down. There was only one section that I could get close to flooring it; I had to slowly squeeze the gas pedal down. As soon as my foot got close to the floor, it was time to brake.

While I am a green amateur, my brother competes in Autocross nationally. We co-drove my car, and afterwards his comments were: "The M4 is surprisingly powerful. The turbos spin up instantly; BMW did an awesome job with this one."

His times put mine to shame. In fact he had a faster time in my M4 than he did in his track prepared FR-S! I had a blast and learned more about handling a car in one afternoon than I had in many years.

I am so happy with this car! After the second run, I had the second fastest time in the Novice group. The car feels responsive and predictable. There were times when the car felt a little large (like entering the first C-Box), but it corners at high enough speeds to make up for it.

And the car taught me that I have so more to learn. Which may be the beauty of Autocrossing.

December Fastrack is out, and the F80 M3/F82 M4 have been classed into A-street.
