F***ing Potholes!

Shitty weekend - went to drop off my mom at the airport from my apartment. Michigan roads are garbage, but my 19" VMRs had been doing pretty well. On the highway driving to the airport on I-94, hit a pothole in the middle lane at about 80. Now I'm usually the guy driving like a drunk person trying to avoid road imperfections and potholes, but this one came at out of nowhere, caught me off guard, and all lanes were busy. Car seemed to drive fine and managed to make it to the airport so I thought it was okay, but I came out to this:

and this:

Fuck. Had to drive back home and around for about 50 miles as the tire wore down to about 10 PSI. Luckily no cracks...now I'm rolling around like this:

Much more comfortable and quicker, but damn I miss my VMRs. Disappointed in the strength of the wheels though.

I had a set of VMR 710s on my S4 and they were quite possibly the worst for bends. I had BFG G-Force tires on them and after 15K miles when I replaced the tires all 4 wheels had bends. Never experienced this with any other wheel manufacturer and I've had a lot of custom wheels on cars and trucks.

LOL...VMR wheels and Nankang tires. You have quite the refined taste.

You can't expect average quality at bargain basement pricing.

I needed a set of A/S tires since I had a brand new set of Nitto Summers on these. I got those tires figuring I'll throw them away next summer.

Surprisingly, the tires were better than my expectations - not too harsh and were quiet.

That setup still looked better than my stock 18" setup with continental RFTs.

The "backup" wheels still look very hot. My favourite OEM wheel.

Ouch! My condolences on this road damage. All I can add is this is common on low profile tire/wheel sets. Same concern on Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, and others.

Just chalk it up to "road hazard" and move on trying to make the best of it.

At least you didn't immediately lose inflation and have either accident or get stranded int bad spot. I shiver at this thought when I hit a very bad pot hole in one of my cars....

VMR's are the worst. I had a set that was custom bored to fit infiniti specs and they lasted me one season, good looking wheels but durability was awful. Nothing is more durable than stock alloy wheels from the manufacturer, even 3 piece luxury wheels that cost 8k a set are prone to bend.

If I was to replace OEM wheels, I'd not settle for anything less than forged BBS.

I've hit curbs and pot holes with OEM wheels and other high quality brands before, not a single wheel was bent. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. That goes with tires as well. Would never trust "rice-rubber".

That sucks. Roads here are awful as well. I already replaced two tires in less than one year of ownership. The first one was due to a pothole. The pothole completely destroyed the front passenger tire, leaving a deep 2" gash in it. I have the OEM rims and frankly I was surprised there was no damage to those. Thank God for tire insurance which will pay for itself with one more repair.

People outside of Michigan don't really understand what we mean by potholes. We have the worst roads in the country because of lowest spending on them. If it makes you feel better, I destroyed an EDC shock on my M3 (in addition to 2 Miro wheels) due to an unavoidable crater in Ann Arbor last winter. $1200 repair not including the wheels!

This was in East Lansing earlier this year - a pothole repair truck fell into a "pothole".

Damn that sucks. Hopefully they will be able to bend it back out without cracking it. Knock on wood I have ridden on my 20s on roads just as bad as Michigan and nothing yet. There have been times I was afraid to get out to look but still round. Now watch as soon as I said that I will bend one..LOL..

Bend back? Its not a dent on a door, its mechanucal strength is compromised and cant be recovered. Throw it in the trash.

Yup bend back. No not true about the mechanical strength. These wheels are cast. I seen way worse bends, even cracked wheels get repaired good as new. They heat it up and pound it back into shape and you would never know. Sometimes the bend may be too bad and when they heat it up, it can crack pounding it out, then the wheel is toast. Been dealing with custom wheels for 25+ years. I had many wheels corrected before and know they can.

I guess these wheels are only a couple 100 a piece anyways so probably better off to buy new because it will cost a min 150 and can go up from there to fix, if they can.

That sucks Op
I have had VMR 710 19" for more than a year now and no problems at all , not sure why VMR's are getting all the hate.
You can't expect the same quality from VMR (set will cost ~1000$) that you get from BBS (set will cost ~4000$)
Also OP you can call VMR and check if their warranty covers it

+ 1. I will get them fixed. Good luck with 20s, I love how they look on F30s, but 19s are the limit haha.

1) It's not a crack, it's a bend, and a medium sized one.
2) The car did not shudder or drive funny for 50 driving on it.
3) It lost 20 psi in 24 hours.
4) It's on the lip.

Why would I waste a fixable rim by throwing it away for a small bend? I've had bends happen on factory OEM rims.

Also, I have a spare 8.5 hahaha.

I have a spare. I will either put the spare or this bend back.

+ 1. I know these are not BBS, I did not buy them expecting BBS quality (frankly, I think BBS are kind of overpriced). The kind of potholes that there are here in Michigan would bend BBS, OEM BMW, or any other rim. It is that bad (and I come from NJ so I know about potholes and bad roads - it's worse out here).

Consider yourself fortunate. In the last 5 months I've had to replace 1 rim and repair the other 3 on my 750. Stock 18" Style 250, made by Cromadora.

Same thing happened to me in NJ years ago with Fondmetals, wheels known to be a bit bendy. I killed THREE wheels 24 hours before the European Car mag shoot.

I just don't think Metro-Detroit is 19" friendly unless it's a $$ forged wheel. But then I would cringe even more to F-up a $100 a pc wheel.
