Grinding Gear 1-2 Shift 335xi F30

I have a 2014 335xi M Sport with the 6 speed transmission. I have noticed recently that under heavy throttle the 1-2 shift has a grinding noise to it. I am familiar with the notorious notchyness of bmw transmissions but this is different. It only happens under heavy throttle though.

Yes I know how to drive manual. This is my 3rd 335 in stick.

Any ideas on the issue?

Not cheap. Take care of it under warranty. Synchro only gets worse over time.

I would have the same issue with my E9X car but it was strangely intermittent. I've also had this issue with my brand new 435i. I've been driving manual cars for more than 10 years. I wonder if it has to do with the small valve that BMW put on these cars somewhere in the hydraulic clutch system. I can't remember the name of this valve right now.

Otherwise, yes I agree that you might have bad synchros.

Wow that's terrible to hear it might not be a one off issue with mine.

Are you referring to the clutch delay valve?

Im not sure if the new ones have these and if they are removable. Does anyone know?

not sure if there is a CDV in an F30. been wondering that myself. Personally I think the 6MT in my F30 335 is the smoothest 3 series transmission i have had in a long time. my E90 335 was not great, E91 328 was better but still had issues 1-2, as did my E46 and E30 M3. I removed the CDV from the E90, E91, and E46 and ran Redline MTL in the box of all three. that seemed to help a bit.

That's good to hear. I think mine definitely has some sort of issue.

We will find out Monday for sure at the dealer. Let's hope they are able to fix it.

Not the first reported issue with the 6MT in these cars. There have been several who have had their transmissions replaced due to the 2nd gear synchro.

I've never had it grind, but my transmission simply doesn't want to downshift into 2nd sometimes.

That's odd my car will always downshift into second easily but does not like to engage into 2nd from 1st under heavy throttle. When it does engage it grinds.

Hoping the transmission does not need to be replaced. I would be out of the car for awhile.

I have replaced syncros on my 260 getrag, they are $200 and a couple hours to replace once you have the trans off.

My 6MT never has issues, it seems downshifting to 1st is not as smooth but otherwise I thought the trans is great. If you suspect is the syncro, just double clutch. Pull the car out of gear, release the clutch, push it in and try shifting to the next gear. If it doesn't grind it's the syncro

Thanks for that test. I will try it and see what happens.

This happend to me at around 10k miles, needed the entire transmission replaced because my synchronization was off. Make an appointment asap, because the grinding will only get worse.

Wow I'm sorry to hear that. How long was your car in the shop for?

Is it smooth from 1-2 shift now or still a little notchy?

I only have 5,500 miles on it.

OP - what was the final resolution of this issue? I text drove a 6MT 335xi a few weeks ago, and noticed the same grind on 1-2 shifts intermittently (told the dealership about it). I just assumed it was some issue with that car. But NOW I just drove home with my new (to me) 2014 335i 6MT, and both my son and I noticed it happening periodically, generally on a more aggressive 1-2 shift. It is more than a bit disconcerting.

p.s. Overall though, I think this 6MT is MUCH improved over my E90 330i!!!! Much to my relief.

Well, I took mine in. It was a quick diagnosis: Faulty 2nd gear synchro. Solution: new transmission (BMW doesn't let dealers even crack open the transmission case). It's on order for replacement next week.

Pretty disappointing in a car with 20,000 miles.

I can imagine. The bright side is it didn't let go on 48,001 miles, right?

True! The SA said it would have been nearly $7,000 outside of warranty. That seems a bit high...he might've been just throwing out numbers.

That's an accurate number I believe. They told me the cost is 7k but if it was outside of warranty it would be at least 9k.
