N54 Rod Knock

So i have 86k miles on my 335 and i take care of it since i bought it at 48k miles. i noticed that around 70k miles in between oil changes (every 5k miles) that i would have to drop in about 2-3 quarts of oil. Around 80k miles a check engine light came on and i took it to the shop. I have an extended warranty on the car and after diagnosing the problem with a hard fault on the computer the cam lifters were found to be the culprit. unfortunately the check engine light went out and the after market warranty company refused to approve the repair. at 86k miles the check engine light came on again and this time i noticed some weird noises. my mechanic noticed the noises and put it on the lift and checked the noise from the bottom. he told me i had a rod knock and recommended the engine be replaced. are there any other people that this has happened to? is this a common problem on this motor?

Not common at all.
What do you mean lifters? I didn't realize any OHC engine could have lifters?

Also, these cars make weird noises at times when they're missing or slightly missing.
plenty of people have mistaken an accessory, injector or dual mass flywheel as something wrong with the engine when it's one of those things.

I'm not sure if you're just having a hard time repeating what you were told by the mechanic but this guy doesn't sound too promising. Is he a general mechanic or does he specialize in BMWs?

i don't think its common.. however the hydraulic lifters are very noisy its possible thats all they are hearing? is this a stealer or an indy? one of the lifters might be stuck, but shouldn't require a new engine.. tough to assist blindly from the sidelines.

do you have a video of the noise perhaps we could take a listen and tell if it sounds normal to us or not.

now if you have an extended warranty you should be able to get a new motor fo free anyway right? no reason not to go through with it.

hes an indy mechanic. he showed me the wear on the cams and it ran a groove into the cams so he wasnt lying. he believes this problem led to the eventual rod knock that i am experiencing now. i believe the motor replacement and installation will run between 7-9k

how can the warranty company refuse to pay the repair?

they told me at the time the check engine light needs to be on before they can approve the repair. well the check engine light was on the second time i brought it in and the engine was making noise. so this time they had no choice but to approve the repair but they gave me such a hard time about it and i was freaking out about the situation. the insurance company sent out an inspector twice before finally authorizing a motor replacement.

Does it sound like this?

When that happened to me I was the only person I had heard of that had that happen.

I had my motor replaced with one from a salvage yard.

Just this week I found a thread over on Bimmerfest that someone else is having the same issue.

Look at your oil filter and see if there is metal in there. With my car there were obvious large metal chunks in the oil filter and all of the oil.

actually it was worse. every time u give it gas there was a loud thunk and it came from the bottom end. one time when the mechanic gave it gas i thought the bottom end was going to explode. yea i am getting a replacement motor from a salvage yard/junk yard with about 60k miles on it. i am worried though that this will happen again.

if its worse than the video above then.. wow.. anyway it has not been a common issue and i don't think you should be concerned about it happening again.. glad they finally approved it though.

This is getting kinda worrying now. This is now the 3rd instance of this including mine that I've seen int he past month.

My car only had 61k on it. The other one I read about had over 100k

I have my motor on a stand and will be tearing it down to see what happened.

OP, has your motor been taken apart to find out what happened?

i believe the mechanic said that he believes that the wear on the cam lifters caused a drop in oil pressure which in turn caused the rod knock

Not sure yet. crank or rod bearing is suspected as the cause.

It started when I was driving down the highway and shifted to 4th to pass someone. I was only at about 5k RPM when it started. the weird part is the car kept performing fine while I drove it home.

Yea, I had to pay an extra $250 in a core charge to keep mine. I just sold the oil filter housing from it for $200 though and have the turbos up for sale, so I'm gonna come out on top.

I ended up having to pay out of pocket for my replacement. I literally was losing sleep over this for days.

I've finally just accepted that it happened and am working on paying it off as fast as possible now. It ended up costing me about 11k over all, but that includes new turbos and a new 335is clutch. The motor I got had 49k on it compared to the 61k on my car.

I will be creating a topic about it with pics when I get it done. The motor is at a friends house, so it's been difficult to work out times in our schedules to tear it down. I got the turbos and oil filter housing off (to sell) and should be pulling the oil pan next chance I get to work on it.
