Lightbulb Does "Park" engage at speeds above 5 MPh?

While driving at speed and the P on the top of the Gear Lever is Pressed, does the car go into park, or does it go into Neutral?

Press it and find out.
You should also see if you can put it in reverse at highway speeds.

It doesn't engage, nor does it engage neutral.

LOL, I wonder who would be willing to confirm it. Unless from BMW.

Any Takers??

I've done it before. It's an electronic transmission so it won't do anything. It will literally give you a chime and warn you that the car cannot enter park unless the car is completely stopped and the brake pedal is depressed.

Also, if you turn the car off without putting the car in park, the car will just put itself in park.

Was this by accident?

A neat thing is that if you have the stick over in Sport/Manual Mode, pressing P will phisically Shift the Stick Over to the Right and Go into Park.

Also glad to know we can't mess things up by accidentally hitting that button at speed.

Yeah I hit it by accident while driving down the highway but I figured it wouldn't actually go into Park as it's an electronic transmission and the software wouldn't actually allow you to do something like that. I tried to do it on purpose once in a Prius and it did the same thing so I wasn't surprised.

I seem to recall this being on an episode of Click and Clack. I believe they said it's been locked out of auto transmissions (going into Park at speed) for years. Probably applies to reverse too.

It's even easier now that's just done in the software. Some BMW engineer probably coded an easter egg that lights up the instrument panel and displays, "WTF Dummkopf!" when you do it. I think OP should try and let us know

I'll do it after you Chiefneil!

But you have to admit it's now easier to hit the Park button once, where before you would have to press a button and move lever to engage.

Oh I agree. I don't even know why there's a lock button if they're not going to require using it.

I also think it would be epic if a BMW programmer snuck in an Easter egg for things like that.

It will most certainly engage neutral while on the move without pressing the unlock button... see Fith Gear doing it... lol

Any car will engage in neutral without having to hit the unlock button and while moving.

The only time you need to hit the unlock button in this car is to put it in reverse.

Not so. I assume there is some speed cap that will lock out park from engaging, but I can tell you from watching a valet hit the park button on my 2012 F30 that it most certainly will engage park while rolling slowly without the brake pedal depressed. It will also make the most godawful noise you ever heard in your life.

Took my car to get tinted this past weekend, and when the Tinter asked me for the fob to drive it into the Garage, I looked at him and said "who's going to drive the vehicle?", he said him. I just looked at him and pulled the car into the garage myself.

People can really destroy things they aren't used to, they don't realize that.
