MP3 for cars with Navigation: FINALLY!
I recently posted about this & not a clue where the thread went to?
On 12/20/2005 I had 19.2 installed on my car. While there I spoke with Regional Manager. Regarding why I still can't play MP3's for 6 months owning my car. Told them I want the CD Changer removed since it's useless. I would also like a full refund of $900.00 for this CD Changer. Long story short: reason why we can't play MP3's is not software updates it's the wrong damn CD Changer installed in our cars. There are two versions & we all have been getting wrong ones. My dealer ordered me the correct Changer & came in yesterday. I have a 1/12 appointment to have it installed. If all goes well & I expect it to. I will post both serial numbers... for Changers and which is the correct one you all should have. Far as cars without Navigation, my guess is wrong radio's in your cars as I don't believe it's a software issue, Could be who knows? If new software CIP 20.1 doesn't do it & I expect not? Radio's are it. Update: 1/13/2006 Got my car back today & now plays MP3's They installed new CD Changer but when doing so car asked for... new CIP 20.1 software update. Not sure if Changer or update did the trick? Advice: get your car updated with 20.1 software & if still no MP3? You need to have dealer look up part # for CD Changer in your car. Most likely they installed part #65-12-6-964-601. If yes? it's the incorrect Changer for your car. Have dealer install new Changer @ no cost to you! New part # is 65-12-6-964-602. Bottom line: we will all now have MP3 for our cars no matter when it was built. Just go after your dealers & do not accept no for a answer. Good Luck! I'd like to know the answer to this. I have had the cd changer installed as well and I burned a few cd's with different methods and nothing has worked. Called the dealer abou it and they said that it wasn't supposed to play mp3's.

All cars before September are to play MP3's in all brochures & web-site. I still have my brochure from May when I ordered my car. Navigation cars are to have CD CHangers to have MP3's. Cars made after September 2005 have nothing to be concerned about. Only us early buyers & you all need to make a fuss about it or u get zip! |

Did you even read the post I linked to ? BMW head office sent an email clearly stating that CIP 20.0 plus an additional patch gives MP3 functionality. I would not be making such claims unless they were true - just call your dealer and ask. The downer is I have to pay for it ... but not a lot

So I guess from their point of view they are giving me an additional feature over and above what I paid for ... from my point of view, non prof navi E90s all had MP3 so I mine should have it too. I think they are wrong, but they have the upper hand. Summary: They've got the update ... I want it ... I gotta pay

They just want to make a quick buck. The owners manual clearly states that the MP3 are supported and they have screen shots of it working on a I-Drive. So BMW and your dealer does not have a leg to stand on when they say it was not supported when you bought the car.
If I were you I'd refuse to pay for it and request that BMW supply you with information in writing where they state they there is a cost attached to enabling pre-September e90's for MP3 functionality. |

I'm in the same position as you Costa.
I think of this lack of mp3 funtionality as a warranty issue, especially since it is clearly mentioned in the handbook when I bought the car. There is no mention of this being a chargeable item, needing to be carried out as an 'update', in any information provided to customers at the time of purchase. I'm thinking of some ways of getting around the charge- http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10637 |

I was with the Regional Manager for hours last week & we have figure out that the wrong CD Changers have been installed in Navigation cars. I'm talking about US cars not a clue about cars from Europe? I'm seeing tons of post of cars from Europe that software gives MP3 for their cars. This doesn't mean software will be for US cars? Having my new CD Changer installed this Thursday by my dealer. Until then I will wait & see it my Regional Manager is correct or not? |

Barry, Please let us know what happens with this. I have the CD changer as well and I thought by added this we were supposed to get the ability to play mp3's. If it does work for you please post the correct part number.

The tech doing the upgrade on my car said there is not new hardware (CD changer) required he said something about having to put the CCC into retofit mode then applying the CIP20 upgrade to get the MP3's to function. I'll know more on the 16th when they actually do the work.
BTW my car was built in South Africa not sure USA or Europian builds differ. |

Way I see it!
Cars in US are different then ones in Europe. What works for other countries does not work on US cars. Zillion people post past software updates in Europe & things that work on their cars still don't with same software here. I get my new CD Changer installed tomorrow, we shall see! |

In my mind the hardware is irrelevant - all CD drives can read digital data. Whether it is a .wav file or a .MP3 file does not matter. It is how this data is decoded that matters. I think this whole problem is a software issue. If it works with a new CD stacker, then it most probably means they have installed the wrong driver software for your current stacker. I appreciate what you are saying about US and European models being different is subtle ways but I doubt that they would have gone to the trouble of installing a certain type of CD player just for US folks. I guess time will tell. Please post the results of your experience.
