Best size for snow tire rim size

Hi Everyone,

So I have the MP 19" wheels on my xDrive and I am trying to figure out what rim size and snow tire size to use this winter.

I still have 17" rims from my old 135I that had the Msport six piston brakes, I have not done a fit test yet to confirm if they clear the brakes.
They are 17"x8" 5-120 ET45

The dealership told me that the winter package they are offering is a 17" rim with 205/50/17.

Should I stick with the 17" if they fit or go with 18"?

Also what size snow tire are most of you running on those two rim sizes?

I bought 17's for mine from a 335i, running 225/45R17 Continental ExtremeWinter Contacts.

No issues clearing the brakes?
That is the size of snow that I am thinking of using as well.

See my BBS SR thread for pics but I got 17" and test fit, worked fine. Don't forget you're dealing w a much thicker sidewalk so the winter setup is about the same size overall diameter as the 18" that came stock for me.

Curious about this one too with a similar config (xdrive / 19" m perf wheels). Wondering whether to go staggered or square, 17 or 18, which specific wheels and tires. Tire Rack said whatever their configurator shows is what they got, haven't yet found anything wheel wise I've particularly liked and want to get this sorted out soon.

My other concern about playing with tire sizing is what effect if any it has on the computers and xDrive. On our old 135I we used 205/50/17 Conti. extreme winter contacts. The car felt loose and set the traction light off under medium acceleration from a stop and even at highway speed if you lightly pressed the gas it would sometimes evoke the traction control.
BMW said it was because we used none BMW wheels which I don't believe.

If my 17" rims fit I am leaning towards a square set up of 225/45/17. I am test fitting my wheels on Saturday.

I am a huge Michelin fan, always been super happy with there products and after sales support. If I do 17" rims then I am going with the Primacy Alpin PA3. If I do 18" rims I will try the Pilot Alpin PA4

Same here on good experience with Michelins...am inclined towards them. Like you I'm wondering about performance / systems integration with wheel size variations on the xDrive and if the rest of the vehicle has been tuned for the config we have. Someone said in one of the winter tire/wheel threads the Canada forum that they'd been recommended 17" by their dealer and as BEM-S4 pointed out they fit on his.

From what I understand not all 17" rims will clear the brakes.
I have Motegi Racing Wheels, model MR118 17x8 5-120 ET45.
I bought them from TireRack as there suggested winter rim for the 135i

Mine cleared the front caliper by about 5mm on the inside. I bought some spacers to add a bit if I need it.

That probably has more to do with a 300hp car trying to put power down through a 205 winter tire. I traded deep snow traction of a narrower tire for better dry by going 225. Having done that I fully expect we'll get slammed with snow this year.

Extreme diameter & weight variations will throw the adaptive suspension off because it uses computer model which assumes stock wheel parameters.

Weight is probably up a bit on my winters, but the diameter is 0.5% difference.

I got a set $700 shipped (slightly used), otherwise I would of gotten 17s

I did similar but bought a set of 135i style 264's(staggered) used for $400. Tires are mounted and fit fine.

I know BMW Canada has the following recommended 2 Series Winter Tires Packages:
CAD$2240
Style 411
205/55R16
7x16

CAD$2740
Style 380
7x17
205/50R17

=====
But I don't want to buy new rims if I don't have to. From the E90 330i that I'm trading in, I have:
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32
225/45R17 RSC
Style 159 8x17

I also noticed that in the owner's manual, there's a factory config for an M235i M+S at 225/45R17 RSC but it doesn't specify the rim size. However, that does give me hope that the suspension engineers had this tire size in mind when tuning.

However, based on people's experience here, my winter tires from my E90 330i should fit, right? My M235i is November production for December delivery, so unfortunately I will probably be fitting winter tires on right away.

Well I tried my old 17" rims and they fit the front but in the back they touched the top of the calliper ever so slightly. At this point I think I am going with a 18" winter rim

Yea i like the look and the tires sound decent. I am going to try the runflats on winters since i am not looking for performance anyways.

I also want my family to be safe on cold alberta days if i do get a puncture.
