OEM exhaust metallic clicking noise

Hi all,

I mounted my GoPro to my exhaust and I heard something strange after checking out the video. I never noticed this from driving .. so it is really at the exhaust.

Nearly evertime I accelerate you hear a metallic clicking noise. Can somebody tell me what that is or if I should not worry about it? Engine is warm and everything was in sport+ mode. is this the exhaust valve?

I hear a lot more often than the times you've outlined. Not sure what it is. Anything loose?

yes it is much more often, just mentioned it where you can clearly hear it.

at the end of the drive, which is not in the video, there was nothing anymore ..

Could simply be the metal expanding as it gets hot.

I'm almost %100 certain that's the exhaust flaps opening and closing.

If you just turn on your car and wait until the cold idle goes down and turn it to sport plus from eco.. you will hear it. its the flaps.

No, I think the pieces heat up and expand, closing the play in it. The valves always close between 2000-3000 rpm at small throttle openings to prevent drone, but in sport or sport plus Engine mode, the valves are mostly open except for that. This does mean that you have a lot of opening and closing going on, resulting in the clicking

It's the exhaust valves rattling - very common on our cars. It's a PITA. You can live with it, dealer it or try the spring fix, which improves, but doesn't completely fix the rattle once the car is warm.

I have read a few on this site have had BMW replace under warranty. Or even asked for an M performamce upgrade, paying the difference of MSRP. Of course all this will vary from dealer to dealer, and my guess is if enough complain, a BMW retro fix will soon appear rather than eating the cost of a new muffler replacements.

I will check with my BMW dealer. If it is possible to change it under warranty to the MPE and I have to pay the diffrence, I would go for it.

Please let me know how you come out, even on PM if you wish. I get my car next week and if I have the same experience rattling, I'd like to know which dealer you went to, and if they did offer you a swap out + $. Are you in NOVA area by any chance?

Exhaust flaps I have it on my RS5. Nothing to worry about but it might be a good opportunity to upgrade to the Performance exhaust. I hope this issue continues from BMW until I order my car .

That is what the exhaust valves sound like when they open and close. It truly is normal operation.

I can say that this is the BEST sounding OEM exhaust I have heard to date. No rattling at any time. Not trying to be a dick by saying this but if you put a go pro at the tailpipes and hear a metallic click, in no way is that a manufacturing defect that would justify replacement of the exhaust.

Nowhere near the rattle that I and others have experienced.

I never said that I also think that this is not an issue at all! but if they replace it and you can upgrade to MPE .. why not?

Well that's the whole point and the mentality that prevents people who HAVE a real problem from getting their exhausts replaced. BMW tries to prevent the avalanche of claims of "bad exhaust" by being stingy with replacements.

I thought they are experts? so they should rather fast distinguish between a faulty exhaust or not. I only sent them the video and ask them if this is ok or not and that I heard that BMW is replacing exhaust because of that similiar noise ...
