Water pump replacement...what else while there?
Hey all,
Going to be replacing my water pump on my 335i as preventative maintenance here real soon, wasn't sure what else to replace while down there. I understand most replace the thermostat as well, not sure if this is because of preventative maintenance or what. Anything else worthy of replacing while I'm taking to time down there? Appreciate it!

The thermostat would be a good idea too, being it eventually could fail as well. And being its right there with the waterpump it would be ideal to change too

That's what I figured, as preventative maintenance. I'm assuming most go with OEM, rather than something that opens at a different temperature?

I recently did my water pump and Tstat.
Cost 405 including shipping. The pump is continental. Oem. The Tstat was hamman. Again oem. But the Tstat started giving me problems like Tstat jam errors. The reseller shipped me a Behr again oem brand and it is all good. Also remember you have to replace the 3 original screws on the water pump as they are aluminum, and 1 time use only on our magnesium block. The new screws should be 26mm long and most suppliers are providing metal screws, which are reusable. Safety glasses help..... There is a lot drip splashing. Silicone Grease.... Not the spray type. Good time to inspect your oil pan gasket. Good time to spray some lithium grease in the front lower sway bar mounting bushings. Good luck. DN |

I am actually doing this very soon as well on my 335i Coupe I highly recommend replacing the thermostat, and oil filter housing gasket as well. It likely that it is already leaking after 120,000 KMs or equivalent in miles.
Dark Nemesis where did you pickup your Water pump? I read that the OEM manufacturer is Siemens not Continental (I guess it could be both depending on the Model) |

If you view the video of BavAuto's DIY (2part video) and pretty much every other site the new pump is continental.
I alway put OEM.... So as far as my research, it came up as continental. Also demand the Behr brand TStat.... I had issues with Hamman brand. Look up eBay seller: importpartsdepot Phone them at 1-855-822-0479 Give them your PayPal email address and you get it cheaper then their listed price on eBay. You are protected by PayPal this way. He provides the bolts also but they are the wrong ones... Longer like 32mm in length.... I declined them. And told him why. He send you an invoice to your PayPal.... Shipping was stupid fast.... Like 2 days. I just reviewed my invoice... Paid $393.29 Then look up eBay seller: All_euroautoparts You need 3 of this part number: 11517602123 The new bolts are reusable Incase you need to un-mount the pump. PS, I have a set of these bolts. If you want them.... I will ship it. Cost $18.85. I bought 2nd time not knowing the new ones are reusable. PM me, if interested. DN |

I'm about to pull the trigger on this. I'm at 87k and going into winter, I'd rather change the pump now than wind up changing it one cold day when it craps out. I've found an OEM Behr Tstat for about $90, but wasn't sure about the brand of the pump. Thanks for clearing that up.

The oil filter housing usually leaks before or around the same time the water pump fails. Many people believe that when the housing gasket fails it puts small pieces of rubber in the coolant which causes the Water Pump to fail. So it just makes sense to replace it at the same time.

Replace the coolant. You don't need OEM coolant. I use Amsoil coolant with their coolant booster.
Amsoil comes 100% pure. So you have to thin it down with distilled water. You then poor 4oz of coolant booster into each 1 gallon jug. It's a good idea to flush the system out with a coolant flush and distilled water, prior to installing new coolant. So, buy like 4-5 gallons of distilled water. |

Great information, I appreciate it. I think I will be tackling this rather than paying somebody to do it... Can't be much more of a PITA than downpipes, Ha.

Notes: eye wear very important. Behr brand Tstat. Not Hamman. Both are oem. Follow BAVauto DIY. Download it on to your phone for easy look up at will. DN |
