Key fob battery replacement

I think my key fob battery is already dying after only 1 year. I feel like the range is not what it used to be. Now I have to take it out of my pocket or it won't work. Sounds like the battery is low.
  • Is there some kind of warning on the dashboard when the key fob battery is low?
  • Is the replacement of the battery covered in the warranty in the US?

Really?

I was told by the bmw technician guy that gave me the car tutorial that the battery in the fob is a rechargeable battery that needs to be in the car and in use for it to charge. He made no mention about the battery being replaceable. If in fact he was right about the whole rechargeable battery thing then that's gonna be one expensive battery to replace. So was that just a fancy story he made up to make it sound high tech? He did say tho that if the battery dies....u can hold up the fob to some area on the steering column which I assumes communicates via NFC or something in order to activate the push button ignition.

Don't worry and don't bother looking in the owner manual(s). I did that the other day and according to them there are TWO different key fobs shown for the same car - really? - they don't even agree with one another.

Proofreading is a lost art I guess.

In any event my guy told me it's under warrantee - just swing by and we will replace it for free.

The guy who told you that is an idiot. How would it charge if it is in your pocket?! The older keys were rechargeable and charged when you plugged them into the dash. The new keys don't plug in. The battery is covered under the BMW ultimate service program.

Yes. It is covered under the BMW "ultimate service" plan. Go get a new battery from your Center

I replaced my battery at 3000 miles. Maybe comfort access uses it more, but it was starting to not lock when I touched the spot on the handle and a couple times I got the message that the FOB wasn't in the car when trying to start it. I replaced the battery and I haven't had an issue since.

For about a buck, I saved the time and gas needed to go to the dealer for it.

What kind of battery is it?

That's what I was thinking too. But I was like "this is my first bmw...what do I know?" Good to know... So I will no longer feel bad about not using the second set of keys.

I was going to say this, but I couldn't figure out how to do it so nicely.

For a 2014 f30 with comfort access its a CR2450 lithium coin type battery. It's not the size you usually see at most stores. Maybe one of those Batteries Plus stores might have it for a premium. But order it online...they are cheap.

Remove the metal blade key from the fob. Use it as a pry tool in the Fob slot that is exposed by removing the metal key.

Open up the back of your key, and take out battery. Go to CVS, exchange money for battery. Replace battery.

Do we really need an extensive thread on this? The battery removal process is in the manual, and in your car.

Thanks for the thread on the FOB battery. The 2450 battery is huge compaired to a 2032 battery that is so common for vehicle's. The guy at the dealership said "oh we need to change the battery and reprogram the FOB to work. You just can't pop a battery in and have it work properly ". My wife's and my battery lasted over 4 years.

Your dealer POC is clueless/or trying to charge you for reprogramming the FOB. The settings and data stored in the FOB is NOT volatile (flushed with loss of power)

I agree programming is not needed. What they may be talking about is that the maintenance history is or at least used to be placed on the keyfob, that is why they put it in that little black cup thing at the dealership first thing. Doesn't make much sense to me to keep the data there but on my E90 they did and I assume they still do. Perhaps reprogramming means putting that data back on the fob?? Don't know, when mine goes dead I will replace the battery myself.
