With some better tires this could be improved on a lot, as is, not bad.

Each article about the i8 that comes out makes the i8 that much more impressive especially when you consider that it's a low displacement hybrid powertrain.

That's a very impressive laptime considering cars like the ZL1 and 996 GT3 are only 1 second faster.

Very impressive that the i8- the state of art can keep up with a sport car that is 15(!) years older- the GT3.
The new 991 GT3 is almost 6 sec faster on such a short track which is light years difference.
I can bet you that after a few laps when the battery is flat this car is as fast as Fiat Punto.
Good job M-arketing!

Why hate on the i8? It's the first of a new breed, well liked by reviewers, and a surprisingly good performer. The 911 has had many years of iterative improvement. Plus I'm not even sure they're meant to be direct competitors.

No feeding the troll. Only a troll would take the time to post in here and say with a straight face that the i8 and 991 GT3 are comparable on a track.

It's an impressive piece of kit, for sure, but not a track machine. How many laps will the battery last? Two, maybe three?

It's not about battery but tyres. Those low-resistance Bridgestones can take just few laps and they are out. With my M3 I could drive around 100 hot laps with PSS or semi-slick. Based on my experience with i8 at same track, I'd estimate standard i8 tyre can take about 10 laps max before they are totally lost.

Exactly, but what is the i8 meant to do..? This whole thread is a fail...

Yeah, those too, but that's an easy fix.

It's interesting to see what it is capable of at a track, at its limits, and it's a truly impressive hot-lap time, but this is a very fine, efficient and eye-catching road car, not a pure sports car (although these hybrids may be the "new normal" before too long), and not something to do to double duty at the track...

"On the race track, the projected range was plummeting so fast that the on-board computer kept suggesting new charge points by the minute – high time to engage Eco Pro."

"After no more than 30 minutes in total, the psychedelic plaything suddenly slips into limp-home mode. The range indicator is down to one kilometre, first gear only reluctantly picks up speed, the battery harbours around 10% of capacity, and the display suggests we contact the nearest dealer. What would you do with a complex electronic device at home? Turn it off, then on again, of course. Then select Sport, and two laps at seven-tenths restores the battery. The petrol engine drives the high-voltage generator to replenish the charge, and it’s as hush-quiet as it is free of any coupling or decoupling irritations."

I hope some magazine does take it to a lapping day, and sees how it fares over several sessions of hard lapping (and calm drives in between to keep the batteries full).

Finding suitable semi-slick or even high-performance tyres is not easy. Clearence tolerances are very narrow and I suppose the car is pretty sensitive to "wrong" tyres. If you own a tyre company, fine, otherwise it's quite a job to test track tyres. At least OEM wheels can't take any semi-slick that fit this car.

There's no idea of doing hard lapping with i8. It's not targeted for that. Even a car like E92M3 can't do hard lapping in completely OEM. The only modern BMW for that is designed for that is E92M3 GTS.

It's a new breed hybrid sports car. It's supposed to be fast, flashy, techy, yet economical and still drive like a BMW. Seems like it hit that goal. Are you trolling on purpose or are you just dense.
