i8 Dealer Markup Taboo
Hey guys,
So, the dealer is trying to mark me up even though I was on the list 1.5 years ago. I understand capitalism in conjunction with supply/demand economics, but for the dealer to mark me up $10,000 after getting on the list 1.5 years ago, and incessantly inquiring to solidify numbers for the past few months...is that not taboo? Not only that, but they're trying to screw me with a 6% APR as if I was gullible enough to believe automotive finance rates aren't 3% throughout the industry (in some cases even 2.4% for Capital One, et. al). I'm a bit flustered by this whole situation, and am not thrilled with BMW's approach to this. Can anyone chime in with some commentary on what my rebuttals with the dealer should be when we speak on Monday? I feel "taken" as an early adopter, 1.5 year brand advocate, and 7-time-repeat-customer... and I know, I know..."there's another guy in line waiting to pay over sticker." |

Not cool at all. You do NOT have to use the dealer's bank or BMW FS to get financed. Shop around. 5.99% sounds like a high rate for normal circumstances (good credit).
If this is a Pure Impulse car, then the MSRP should be $147,450 according to bmwusa.com. So any way you slice it they are marking up $2k over full MSRP Pure Impulse. Not as bad as $10k though. On the lease MSRP --- The only thing I can think of, is if BMW is not allowing the Pure Impulse package to be "residualized" into the lease, meaning the MSRP is the base MSRP and any options (i.e., Pure Impulse for $10,800) are extra cap cost. Now, BMW has NEVER done that to my knowledge. Porsche does it all the time with what they call "MRM" or Maximum Residual MSRP; all other options above that cost do not get residualized, thus you effectively pay for their full cost during the lease (since the residual is % of the base MSRP or MRM). This makes leasing Porches with a ton of options a horrible idea. I would go on Bimmerfest and post that question in the Ask-A-Dealer section about the MSRP of an i8 lease being capped at base or not. They will laugh at the idea of leasing an i8 (there's a thread on it there) but your question will get answered by an actual dealer. And, run it through the lease calculator on LeaseGuide dot com. Finally, it looks like either way as suspected leasing this car is a horrible idea. Not 100% going to say they are trying to screw you but something looks off with the lease numbers -- it should not be higher than purchase #s at 6%! It won't be much lower, but it certainly shouldn't be higher. Last edited by ddk632; 09-19-2014 at 04:38 PM.. |

Yeah, mine is $147450 with pure impulse. Finalized the paperwork last week, no surprises. And yes, that 6% is crazy. I got 1.8% for 72 months (I always go long and payoff early) with my credit union.

.99 rate for 72 months
I got financed for $100,000 when I bought my 2014 BMW M6 at .99 rate for 72 months in June 2014, so good rate are out there, you just have to look for it and do some leg work with paperwork.

Where are they giving .99% rates for 100k? I might need this soon.

many dealerships across the US are charging much more than 10k over sticker, some are tagging on 20k, 30k...I have heard some are doing 50K+ on them! BMW cannot tell a dealership to NOT adjust the selling price, just the MSRP from what I understand. The 6% is BS though.
Also, keep in mind that just because you are on a waiting list doesn't mean you get treated like royalty. This is an extremely rare car and every dealership is handling their sales of the i8 differently

Sure the above is true; however, it doesn't negate the fact that for a dealer to change what was presumably an MSRP deal and upcharge the customer at the last minute is bad form.
That is assuming that this is actually occurring; OP has not come back to clarify if the car is a PI car or not, nor do we know if BMW is capping the lease residual to base MSRP. |

Well that sucks. I have a feeling you aren't alone. As dealers get wind of i8's going for over sticker they'll want a piece of the pie too. I have a soft rule (I've never had it tested) that I wouldn't pay over sticker...but I might have broken given how long I had waited on the i8.

10,000 over is nothing honestly. You can probably sell it for more in the next coming months and make at least an extra 10,000. Right now the SoCal dealers have sold 9 on 90 over, one sold for 200 over!

The dealer in Naples FL is charging 75 large over sticker, yep, that's not a typo, almost quarter of a million if you want it. Sitting in the showroom for 2+ weeks now. What a load of cr*p. Yes, I was on "the list," but my salesperson was smart enough not to call me.

My i8 Arrived at Port Hueneme
Aboard the M/V Morning Cello at 10:20 last night.
I've heard a few Impulse World i8s have been delivered. Mine is a Tera World in Sophisto Grey with frozen grey trim. How long before it's at my dealer? Can anyone give me an idea of what Bosch charges for the charger installation? I'm thinking of having my electrician do it. I'll have pictures upon delivery. And a report on my test drive. My first trip will be on Mulholland Highway. (Right by my house. Where the BMW fleet in Santa Monica came by every day this Spring.)

Thanks. I'm unlikely to use Bosch for the install but I like the BMW charger.
My car is still at the VDC. Apparently there's a recall on a pressure sensor in the gas tank. Supposedly it's being replaced and I'll take delivery this weekend. Bosch has been very slow in responding and sending around an electrician. And I suspect there is a mark up to grease Bosch's corporate fingers, too. I'll post photos when I take delivery.
