Climate control turning on automatically
Hello all
428i xDrive GC. Took delivery of the car first few days I started to noticed this strange behavior where when I exit the car having turned off all audio and climate (climate is in manual mode) then upon returning either minutes later (after starting the engine) or into the drive I noticed the climate control would be on or minutes later it would turn on by itself. I'm not using the timer option in iDrive to schedule temperature control either. Not using the automatic mode. I thought this might have been set on the key fob so programmed it again with everything turned off but the symptom returned. |

That was very first thing i noticed after i got my car.
It is normal. I think the car is trying to make the environment you left at earlier for you or something. If you stop somewhere real quick, turn off everything, turn off car... Then when you come back and turn the car back on, then the climate control won't turn on by itself. But if you leave the car alone for good enough time it will turn on autatically |

The most annoying "feature" of all!
I dont understand why it does that, and I dont like it, but I think im in the minority here. I would much rather cruise around with the windows open on a nice day and enjoy the fresh air than have the car think I want climate control on. I need to get that coded off soon.

I can deal with it but I'd also rather not. I recall seeing a "remember last climate setting" coding option somewhere for these cars, though maybe that was for the AC compressor. In my experience I can turn off the AC manually and that setting remains, but the fan will always come back on upon restart.

Yes, remember last setting is the proper choice.
I dont want it to always be off when the car starts, just remember what it was last time. (also would love the auto setting to sync the temp between zones, but whatever) This obviously wont be an in issue in the winter, but on a string of nice days its better to just remember the last setting. It would also be one less thing to do during the "pre-flight check" when getting ready to drive. (Start, seat belt, 2 taps on iDrive knob, CC off)

You definitely need to code out the disclaimer, it's very nice to not have to tap the iDrive for that every time! |

Nope, I hate it. I like using ambient air with no AC on days that aren't scorching hot or as you say, ride with the roof open and the windows down. I keep the temp at minimum with the fan going low. When the AC automatically kicks on on its own, it gets freezing. One of the worst "features".

In past post this was explained for the following reason "The A/C comes on to dry out the moisture in the HVAC system as not to cause mildew" Because of this (if it is true) when I don't want the CC or AC compressor on I let it run for a couple of minutes so that if there is any truth to this explanation, I feel I have taken the evil dampness out of the system.

Two factors at play.
1. If system was last set to "off" when car is restarted the system will be "on" when the car is restarted but with fan on lowest setting. This is the part about preventing mildew and smells. With fan always running the HVAC system (evaporator and post evaporator ductwork) gets dried out and prevents mildew and smells. This part makes sense. 2. Humidity sensor. This is the annoying part of the system. Even if A/C button is off, if the sensor detects high humidity and potential for window fogging, the system a/c is turned on for a brief period. This is why, occasionally even running system in manual mode for fresh air w/o A/C the discharge air temp occasionally gets cool / cold. Makes sense to work this way with A/C set to on but with A/C off it should really mean "OFF" |

Actually I have a question about the auto recycle. The manual is not clear. On auto, will the car switch between getting outside and inside air automatically? What are the decision factors for this?
