Car shut off (Drivetrain Malfunction)

EDIT: The LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (IN THE FUEL TANK) was determined to be the failure and it was replaced under warranty.

Yesterday while making a left turn at an intersection, I received a "Drivetrain Malfunction" error as my car began to shake and hesitate. I managed to pull into a parking lot and the car shut off as soon as I stopped. I attempted to restart the car to no avail. The car was towed to my local dealership last night.

From the mild research I've done I believe it's the high pressure fuel pump; however, I spoke with my SA earlier and he's going to take a fuel sample to make sure I don't have contaminated fuel.

I'll keep this thread updated as I find out what's wrong. Hopefully this information becomes useful to someone in the future.

The smile-like design of the M Sport bumper should turn to a frown when being towed.

Good luck with the diagnosis, looking forward to what they find out.

Bummer.

I've recently experienced a couple of instances of "Chasis malfunction - drive moderately" warnings --both from a starting/standstill in my driveway & while on the highway. However, after completing the drive, shutting off the engine and then restarting, it resets to show "No problem".

The first time this happened, I contacted my service rep at BMW and his comment was that it sometimes is a computer glitch that resets. So far that is what has happened.

Unfortunately in your case, much, much more was involved.

Sorry you are experiencing this. Thanks for posting that you will keep an update running.

I had the same issue happened to me two weeks ago and it was the High Pressure Fuel Pump. it seems that this a very common issue lately. Hope that you have better luck than me if that the issue on get the part replace as my car is still in the shop waiting on the part to arrive from Germany.

Good luck!

Yes sir, this is a common issue also. I get the chassis error literally every time I drive my car. I believe it has to do with a faulty suspension sensor.

Thanks for your input. Hope your car is up and running soon.
The service adviser called me and told me that all of the symptoms lead them to believe it's the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP). They ordered it and it will arrive Monday. R&R takes 2 hours so hopefully the car will be ready Monday.

I will let you guys know if this solved the issue.

EDIT: The LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (IN THE FUEL TANK) was replaced.

The low pressure fuel pump was replaced (in-tank fuel pump) and I was able to pickup the car last night.

I hope my original fuel pump simply had a manufacturing defective (rather than a design flaw) which caused it to fail prematurely....I wouldn't want it to fail again in another few months.

PS: My car currently has approximately 13k miles

I think the HPFPs were redesigned from what i understand so the new version shouldnt have a flaw like the original ones.

Similar issue happened to me two weeks ago. Dealer initially suspected HPFP but ultimately determined the HPFP was fine and the low pressure pump was defective.

You guys are absolutely correct. I spoke with my service adviser and he said it was indeed the low pressure pump located in the tank. He had originally told me it was the high pressure fuel pump but I had my doubts and talked to him. I will update/edit my other post.

Just do a handstand as they tow the car away.

Read OP's 1st sentence.
