Question Above 9" of Water for 4 series

Read in the manual that the highest water wading level for the 4 series is approx.. 9".

Just wondering what would be affected after the 9"?

Will the car shut off or breakdown?

Lots could happen, including water lock that breaks the engine.

so to figure out what component they are most worried about using a measuring tape measure the distance from the tail pipe tip to the ground. Then measure from the intake opening to the ground. Those are the two most vital entry points that concern most manufacturers. if a good amount of water makes it into either of these two ports while the vehicle is running you risk hydro lock.

Ona secondary note you dont have to ruin the engine to cause electrical problems so there are many other electronic items that should not get wet period. Most of them are well above the 9" range though.

Well just have to get used to it, because right now I love going through deep puddles fast, just for the fun of it.

C'mon, this is not really a legitimate question. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that if you drive a car in deep water, YES, IT WILL BREAK DOWN OR STOP! That's why the manual says so!

When water starts coming in the doors, it's time to reconsider driving through large pools of water.

You would be surprised. I lived in Arizona for almost five years and it has "the dumb driver law." People would drive through flooded roads, get stuck and call for help. The cops would give them a ticket for essentially waisting their time, i.e. you are dumb if you drive through a flood. Hence, "the dumb driver law."

How deep?

9" water is deep for you? LOL

Just wondering how real world experience compared to the "manual" specs, which we all know can differ.

The cars that I have had before never had a problem in deep water, even the 316TI I had, and it was low! So just wondering how this car fared.

Are you the expert on what questions are "Legitimate" or not? LOL

Also, do you drive a 4 Series?

Trying to get to know as much about "real" life experiences with the vehicle.

Actually a flash flood driving in a country area occurred when I was in my older Toyota Corolla Liftback, and in the area where I was the water level reached around 1/4 way up the door. You could hear the water sloshing around outside against the door. It was very scary, but never did shut off, or have any problems.

Some areas here are prone to flash flooding, so it catches you off guard, and in traffic there is not much you can do, either sit in it while it gets higher, or try to push forward and get through it.

Same in AZ. Flash flooding occurs pretty frequently. That said, driving through a big a$$ lake of water is not the smartest thing to do.

Although a different class of vehicle, I have a picture from when I took delivery at the Performance Center of the water covering the tailpipe on an X3 while doing the off road course.

Good advice, but not good enough. There's a post somewhere (I'm not going to look for it - might have been in another forum) of someone that drove into water that was shallower than 9" and hydro-locked their engine. Remember that water splashes, and the splitter pushes a wave UPwards as well as down. Although our intakes are 2' or move above ground (at the top of the radiator), it's pretty easy to splash enough water up there to cause a lock.
