335I xdrive vs M3 - handling performance and value ?
Hello guys,
I am new here, and planning to get a 335i xdrive later this year. I have been driving my Evo IX in NYC for 7 years and in love with all wheel drive. our evo still work great, and driving it is alot of fun even in winter. I share car with my brother, so we are planning to get another car and hoping it will be useful and fun to drive for a long time I am planning to get a 335I xdrive M sport. with all add on it comes to around 60-65k . compare to M3 70-75k . since my brother hate rear drive, and we both have been driving all wheel, knowing all wheel can handle winter/snow much better. in regard of performance, i see that some easy mod (JB4 BMW Performance Tuner) can boost 335i another 100HP , which already come close to stock M3 ? btw we dont go to race track but we do drive fast. I would appreciate if anyone can give me some suggestions on these 2 cars ? handling, performance and value ? :/ |

mod your evo ix to trap 120mph and it will be able to take care of M3 from a roll or from a dig
Not sure I would bother modding a new N55 335 and would get an older N54 335 for modding purposes |

Answers from the forum will just confuse you even more. With that said, if money is not an issue, buy the M3. Doesn't matter what you put in that 335, it will never match the M. Then you might have problems with your brother, because you will not to let of the car for him to drive. |

I'm pretty happy with my 335xi, it handles decent but definitively drives different then all my previous RWD bmws. I think for how big the F30 is, it's a capable car.
I went through the same thing when I ordered my 335, keep in mind 60k gets you a loaded 335, 70k M3 is a very stripped down one. Maintenance and extended warranty also will be more, you can't get AWD for the F80 so winter performance will not be as good. I found that the 335 is an awesome daily for me, it looks nice, drives decent, its comfortable as a daily, awd should be awesome for winter, Insurance was cheap, decent mpg, decent aftermarket.

Make that 123mph. A forum member has hit 122.

OP you want to go from a 7 year old evo to a 335 or M3. piggy bank must be bulging.
If you plan on driving either with the traction control turned off, you better practice up on your control. Like some others have mentioned - i would drive both. with the traction control off, esp if you are used to driving with it off.

my understanding is that trap was a VBOX iphone app reading, not from a time slip at a drag strip, and the owner was at sea level.
It will be interesting to see where in the range of 114-120 mph most owner's traps end up being. Hopefully it isn't 114. It would be annoying for F8X not to outrun a 7yr old lightly modded N54 335 |

emuleiii,
Can't comment on the M3. Regarding an F30 xDrive, most agree that you should get DHP for improved handling compared to a non-DHP xDrive. On my car, I recently added Dinan Shockware and that improved the handling over the stock DHP. If you want to stay with AWD and a BMW car- - The 6 series offers the same sport suspension with xDrive as with RWD, although its more expensive than an F30 - Looks like the M235i with xDrive has the same sport suspension as the RWD, although its a coupe rather than sedan Good luck, Bruce

If one of you really wants AWD for all year usability than the 335i xdrive is what you should get. If you can afford a M3 keep the evo and buy a 335xdrive, about the same money.
BTW, I own an Evo VIII (375awhp on e85, stoptech brakes, ohlins suspension, rcomps year round, etc) and a 335i rwd (base for max comfort). There is no comparison, 335I gets used at least 90% of the time on the street for comfort and conveniences, evo only sees use when it's been a while since I drove it or preferably am going to the track. That said I contemplate parting with the evo and replacing it with an M3 or C7 vette frequently, but have not been able to do it yet. MODDED Evo is easier on the pocket and faster on the racetrack (in my hands) than either of the cars I'm contemplating, but the all around rawness of the car on the street is tiring when I'm so use to the 335I comfort (growing up too, eco styling does make everyone an their mother want to race you). M3 or C7 would be fast on track and more streetable rest of the time (looks more mature too). But I live in California and have no snow to contend with, if I had snow I'd buy another awd vehicle if it was for year round use, S4 maybe? |

Traded in my EVO after warranty expired and was still holding its value (Low Mileage), plus got a great deal on the 335i. Part of me regrets the move, as I can not find the same joy in the 335i. DD/Comfort/Engine is all for the 335, but for sheer driving pleasure (Steering/Handling/Brakes), the EVO was unmatched. Seeing that you keep your cars for a long time, and that you can afford an F80, I say go for that. My opinion is that you'll be relatively disappointed by the 335i-X. Try before you buy and good luck. |

Love my 335i M sport. Great daily drive. I too was considering getting the M3, but I could get a very nice 335i M Sport for the same price as a used 30K mileage 2011 M3. Also the 335i gets much better gas mileage if that matters.
Also depends on what you want the car for.. You wanna bang and go fast and hit it hard a lot and can afford it. M3 is your best bet. You want a great driving, better MPG, still sweet, sporty car.. the 335 will do the job just fine and it is fun to drive! My opinion a bit biased, but I don't regret my decision at all, even after driving both cars back to back. Good luck!

335 is no slouch - it's a lot of fun to drive and the styling is fun too.
That said M3 is in a different class. I have talked to a few owners and the 2015 M3s seem to be very nice as a DD Good luck!
