Vanos bolts breaking during road trip?
I'm on a road trip from Seattle to San Francisco (left this morning) and as I am driving down the 101 in Oregon, I get the half engine light. I continue to drive very conservatively while looking for a place to pull over. 3 minutes go by and the light goes off. I tried to pull codes using my jb4 mobile app but had nothing. Auto clear was on but I'm not sure if the jb4 would clear vanos related codes or not. After a while I continue driving and start hearing what I am assuming are the bolts literally shearing off. So I'm waiting for the light to come back on and I'm dialing the aaa number (I'm past the factory warranty). No light though. Car started to sound normal again and about 80 miles later still nothing. Can anyone chime in who has had the vanos bolts fail and how it happened? I'm on the mobile app in the middle of nowhere and can't really search at the moment. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

well saw ur reply on my wts post
For my car its a 335i xdrive e92 the Engine malfunction light popped up for about 2days and when i start the engine the rpm was kinda not stable. When i came home after the light at the parking lot the car engine sound became smaller and smaller and then the engine just stopped. i tried to start the engine but it didnt. it cranks with a weird noise and didnt start. i towed my car to bmw and they told me the bolt broke and damaged the engine. I dont have warrenty left like ur car too. i was worried but northwest bmw sent a picture of my engine and vanos to bmw and inspecter came to check my car about 5days later. only charge i had to make was the inspection fee which was $520 what i really think u should do is.. when u see the light.. stop driving.. or else its gonna damage the engine. |

I had mine replaced, make sure. They gonna time your car well after. They did terrible job on my car. Car stools when on red light or parking. Good luck with everything. Car was also was dealership for a week, and they gave me a rental which was nice.

My dealer finally got parts so I have it scheduled for October 10th...which is the earliest appointment they had. At least it's finally getting done and I'm curious to find out if any of them were actually sheared off
