89 vs 91

Had car 3 weeks 335 using ak89 very slight rough idle, does 91 make much difference?

It's been discussed at length...

A quick search in this forum for the word "octane" should reveal stuff...
Like this: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1029280

Here's what BMW recommends:

Recommended fuel grade
BMW recommends AKI 91.

Minimum fuel grade
BMW recommends AKI 89.

Are the cost savings really that big, that you wouldn't want to use the recommended fuel grade?

Why is this always a question?

for a station by me:

Tank: 15.8 gallons.
89: $3.339
91: $3.479

cost to fill:
89: $52.76
91: $54.97

Sure, the prices are different in Canada, but the difference between the grades is likely similar.
If you dont want to spring for the $2.21 difference on your $50k+ car, then I dont know what to say...

It sure does.
I had 2 cars before this that also required premium and I hated filling them every time.
Probably because gas prices got so high and having to spend even a little more pissed me off, especially when the car before those only cost $20 to fill!

But then you realize its not the price of premium that hurts, its just the overall price of fuel that sucks - regardless of grade.

Already spent $90.20 Canadian between two separate fill ups for a total of 67.10 litres to travel roughly 800 km in town and on highways. I switch between ecopro and comfort mode and use sport sparingly during the break-in.

Overall I get 24 MPG but am very happy given this is a I6 turbo; with efficiency slightly better than my old Subaru. Impressed!

Op, if you want to save money on gas, I would recommend filling at Costco over filling with a lesser octane. If the gas savings was such a big deal, was there a reason why you didn't buy the 328 instead?

I drive ~300-400 km per week, and when I compare this car vs my last car (Mazda3) I only spend about $5 more per week on gas.

I owned an E90 325i before this F30 328i. That one was burning 10.5 l/100km. This one is doing 7.5 - 7.8 l/100km. I only fuel it with Shell V-Power as it does not contain any ethanol - which is "supposed" to save the life of the sealings, especially the HPFP. I am saving money and have more performance in hand to use. I am happy.

Only 24 MPG overall? I usually get 28 or upwards, with 34-36 on the highway at 70 MPH. Guess it all depends on how often you have to sit at lights or waiting for traffic, but 24 seems a bit low.

Traffic has been heavy the past few days, and I use auto start stop but hope it doesn't "hurt" the engine in the long run. And I maybe let the engine idle for under a minute both before driving and after driving. But I wait longer for engine idle just right after a spirited drive.

Also related: how do I get my iDrive to show how much range I have left with my current fuel reserves?

Not sure if thats on all versions of iDrive though.

If you have the BC button on the edge of your blinker stalk press that to cycle through the options in the dash display as well.
(again, not sure if this is standard equip or not)

also, it could be my head, but i find the car to be a little more responsive using 100% gas vs 10% ethanol blend. MPG is a little better too...

I can't believe people try and save a buck on their gas grade. You will save more money over the year by not drinking 4 coffee's from starbucks than putting shittier fuel in your car.

I always fill up at Shell and use 91 octane, the difference as the above mentioned is minimal and not worth dealing with problems that may or may not occur IMO.

Once you spend $50,000 plus on a new car, you should be ready public nothing but 91 or above.

Many of the acquaintances I spoke with at car meets with Porsches 911, Gallardos, and F-cars love gassing up at Costco with 91. "Cheap".
I'm following the same suit as well.
