Just Dyno'd 2008 335i e90
Hey guys... well I have had my 2008 335i e90 (Sport Pkg, with Steptronic Trans) (Thanks to Brecht BMW) just two weeks now... 700 Miles... and decided to take her to the dyno.
Well first off.. just 5 days ago... 1 week old... 600 miles... I took her to the drags. IMO 100% Stock... but truth be known... I have a bb in the Exhaust Valve Vacuum hose, and a K&N Air Filter. Car ran 13.50@103.5 MPH On Factory RFT's w/ Factory Pressures. At Firebird Raceway (typically a couple tenths slower than other tracks) So then tonight... took her over to XTREME Motorsports in Tempe, AZ to do some baselines before we chip her & add an exhaust! I was very impressed with the numbers... but decided to add something I think we all would like to know! Not what a K&N does AFTER but WHAT A FACTORY FILTER DOES AFTER the K&N!!! So... I did two pulls with a K&N and full tank of 91 Octane Chevron Fuel... Car Put down 279.4 RWHP and 289.3 RWTQ!!! I was VERY PLEASED!!! EXTREME'S Dyno is typically a percent or two lower than most Dyno Jets... Air Temp was just above 60'... Then... I pulled the K&N... and Dropped in the Factory Filter! Car put down 278.7 RWHP and 286.2 RWTQ!!! I felt this was much more 'real world' then... a slight 'lean' trick... by changing from the Paper Filter to the K&N! Anyways... I couldn't be happier seeing this bone stock Steptronic Car... laying down these kind of numbers! Thanks BMW! & Thanks BRECHT BMW for a great ride! Dave Here are the graphs: Dyno Run 3 is WITH K&N Dyno Run 5 is WITH OEM Filter

Good numbers. I took my BMW to Firebird once. It was all stock and it did 13.6@102, mine is also Steptronic. That day there was head wind and I almost turned around and drove back to Tucson but since I drove one hour I decided to stay.
I want it to prove the altitude boost compensation but I ended running the same times in Phoenix as I did in Tucson, I insist I did not run faster because of the head wind but I also think my car is perhaps boosting more in Tucson than in Phoenix. The nxt time take your car to AZdynochip, it is not even 5 minutes away from the racetrack and they have an outdoors dynojet. |

You are definitely right about Boost isn't affected by Altitude as much... but Firebird is just notorious for poor track prep as well! In my N/A Cars... I am consistently a tenth or two quicker and a mph or more faster going to Speedworld. But it's typically just due to better launches out there.
Tucson is even higher altitude than Firebird... but Firebird is 1,350ish... Peace, Dave

That's some great numbers...But damn...you don't really let her break in do you? lol, if you're leasing though, then I can understand. Congrats on the car!

Yeah... I'm not a big believer in the break in deal... I never have been... This car saw 130 w/ about 75 miles on it... You have to break them in like you plan on driving them! I've never had a car use oil, etc... It's the only way to the seat the rings! (I beleive)
1,200 miles? (that's what our book says)... for 4,000 RPMS??? OMG!!! Just put a gun to my head if that's what I had to do! I wonder how much carbon get's built up over 1,200 miles... 'cruising' at less than 4,000 RPMS! But... everyone has there own theory's on what's best for their cars. Peace, Dave

2 rwhp and 3 rwtq from the K&N on a stock car sounds about right.
With a chip and more boost, the added air the K&N provides will add even more hp/tq And if the dynos had fans that could put 50-60 mph winds to the front of the car, those numbers would improve even more. Their is no "trick" to which way you test it. BTW, I wouldn't say that dynojet reads low. If anything it reads a bit too high based on those numbers when compared to a hundred or so other stock 335i's that have been on dynojets across the country. You're drag times are right on par too, maybe .1 and 1 second slow. But tracks vary so much and without correction factors, that's within the norm. Glad you are enjoying the car so far. |

Thanks, yeah... No... I was just saying... when adding the K&N (Stock) at first you can see a slight 'lean' condition... on the dyno... which will net you a few more HP.. .then you 'really' get once it adjusts.
And... Driver... I probably have about 2 to 3 thousand dyno runs in my life... I've been to 30% of the dyno's in AZ (there's just so many damn new ones now) and Xtreme is the most conservative when I've had friends dyno at both. (At least when dynoing my Z-06's, Firebirds, and Club Racing Cars) compared to friends in other states on other dyno's. But I also think you are right... the conservative 'ness' is probably much less... when we factor in 'Boosted' cars vs. the prior stuff I've done we're all N/A. And yes... I put the K&N back in after the Dyno. even if.. 1 HP, and 1 TQ... I felt I did everything to 'help' the OEM Filter... and K&N was still on top! Peace, Dave

Nice, there is no doubt the K&N works and works very good.
For $60 retail, or as low as about $40 on ebay, it's the cheapest hp/tq you can get. And it's made top notch too. Now hit up Speedworld, see what you run there, I heard that's a good track. |

Yup... Speedworld is a very good track! That's where I typically run... but for the Baseline... all Stock... I wasn't planning on making the 70 mile commute! I will once the SSTT is on the car!! (Sorry no wire splicing for me this round)
Peace,

I will look forward to hearing your experience with auto-x'ing this car. I plan to run mine with BMW CCA next season. What tires are you planning on using?

None of the piggybacks require splicing wires. Just unplugging stock wires and plugging in the piggybacks. No cutting/splicing though. SSTT is a good starting point though. I wish the other piggybacks were as easy to install and remove. |

Ahh... thanks for the update on that... I didn't realize that...
But yeah... for now... since I'm not about every 'tenth' with this car... the SSTT is just too simple to pass up. Good to know though!
