A couple of clarifications with the BMW CF splitters and front apron.
I just did the install. Without all the right tools and using a jack only, it took me 8 hours.
I made a few observations along the way in terms of install: 1) you can definitely install the apron without the CF splitters, no issues whatsoever 2) you can certainly install the CF splitters without the front apron 3) either way, the underbody plastic trim to the left and right of the engine shield needs to be cut 4) in total I had to drill 24 holes, I am not reversing this install anytime soon 5) BMW calls for Betalink for the CF splitters, I tried to use 3M tap. It's just too awkward. Use the Betalink Instructions were pretty good. Hence, I took no pics. Hope this is .

Did it fit tight around the bumper without the splitters. Or we're there gaps that show where the splitters go into?

Ya I really don't like the look with the CF splitters even with the gap I may have to just live with it.
I looked back at the M4 Concept and the lip appeared to have some integrated shims that closed the gap. Is nothing like that available with the M Lip? |

I think for somebody that doesn't care for the splitters, it's bad enough to have to pay for them in the first place, but twice as bad to have to pay for them and then pay to have them painted.

It would. You just have to tighten the screws more. The delta is the 1-2MM thickness of the splitters.

It would go away once you tighten the lip to the bumper. There are 7 bolts on each side to "mold" the inner lip to the bumper. The instructions even list the CF splitters as an optional step.

BMW was weird. The first few lips they shipped worked fine with no splitter, but the set I got and subsequent lips show, even when tightened down. Did you actually install the lip yourself? Sounds like you did. The inner frame that the outer part can't be tightened further up, so no "molding" can happen. The outer lip just goes over the plastic frame. It definitely would have left a gap.

I did install myself.
Instructions are in the DIY forum.

I ordered the front apron from get BMWParts.com and assumed the install was straight forward. But after reading this thread it seems like it is more involved than I anticipated.
What we need is DIY thread with pics of the install so people can feel confident with the install. I just cancelled my order because looking underneath my M3, I really don't see where it bolts up and the instructions Jason (getBMWParts) don't give me enough information. My 2 cents. |
