Talking Beltronics STiR / AL Priority Custom Installation Radar Detector/Laser Jammer

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, there are no pictures of the actual installation. Sorry about that.

I posted a little bit ago about impulse buying a new M4 that someone else had ordered, but declined actual delivery. Soon after I setup an appointment with Technicar to have a laser jammer/radar detector system installed.

Within the mirror, the top LED is the status indicator for the AntiLaser Priority system. The bottom display is for the Beltronics STiR.

In the lower center cubby the leftmost buttons are the controls of the Beltronics STiR. The left of the two right buttons toggles the power of the STiR, where there right button is a power toggle for the AntiLaser Priority system.
The end cost (parts and installation) $3693.99

Dude you are killing me. Just killing me. I was about to pull the trigger on this exact same install when I picked the car up two weeks ago (mine was the escort 9500CI actually) all with concealed displays and all and I cancelled it thinking it wouldn't be necessary. Now I'm realizing what a huge mistake that was because a) I had no idea the install could be so damn clean, and look so well integrated and b) I didn't realize that you're always speeding in this car even when you don't want to be. It's ridiculous. Sigh... I so want this now... It's going to drive me sick. Great install man... awesome stuff

For me it was a no brainer. I always wanted it done right, and have a high end install for this kind of thing. I finally gave in and bought the M4 (this is my first actually new car purchase) and knew this was what I would do it. I'm sparing no expense for this car.

I'm so happy with the quality of the install. The only thing I would have liked to be different would be that there is a hard cutoff for the power of the radar detector. The power switch on the AL Priority is a hard switch so I can easily keep it off, but I'd like a way to keep the radar detector from turning on if I gave the car to someone, or when I take it into service.

I did the K40 with front and rear radar and front laser jammers. Had mine installed by Audio Excellence which did an amazing job. This is a must for these cars IMO due to the fact you can't feel the speed and tons of TQ!

Unfortunately, I have no information on the installation itself, but I can tell you about it from my (the user's) perspective.
  • The auto brightness no longer works (due to the mirror interrupting whatever sensor it had it in already).
  • There is a multicolor LED for the antilaser priority in top left of the mirror. Basically, if I ever see that doing anything while driving, I'm slowing down.
  • Everything else in the mirror works as before (auto dimming, compass, indicator light for the universal garage door opener).
  • There are two speakers below the steering wheel where the devices will emit whatever noises they want (e.g. the StiR's voice, beeps, warnings, etc).
  • The wires for the display into the mirror are all within the factory housings.
  • The mirror still has full range of motion for adjustments, and feels exactly the same as it did from the factory.

I can't think of anything else, hope that answers your questions!

I recently has a Beltronics system installed in my 435i. I didn't go for the mirror integration because it's a leased car; the display actually tucks in nicely on the upper left dashboard.

I considered putting the controller in the storage cubby, but the installer recommended putting it next to the iDrive so it's more accessible. He mentioned that I would be using the mute and power buttons often. For some strange reason, Bel/Passport put the power button on top.

The cord to the controller is routed through the plastic surrounding the shift lever, so it will be easy to replace when I return the car in 28 months.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but wanted to ask how you are finding the sensitivity of your radar horn installed behind the grill slats. I have the bel stir + installed in my 535 currently, and will most likely be putting one in my M3 next week.

I noticed that on my first install I had pretty poor range behind the grill, and as a result we moved it in front of the lower grill.

So all good so far?

Well, the only thing I can compare it to is an escort 8500 x50 that I had for years before. Whenever I had it it was mounted behind and to the right of my rear view mirror, on the windshield.

That being said, I have had much better luck with this so far. It's been immensely helpful. No close calls, or anything like that. I am supremely happy with the install.

There were two connections (one for the radar, one for the laser shifter) below and to the left (near the OBD connection). I'm not sure where the boxes themselves are, but the plugs I use to update settings/firmware are located there.

How many ALP sensors did you install? They wanted to install 3 upfront and two in the rear on mine as preferred.

Jammer maybe cool but laser protector a joke since a laser from the other end has to be so perfectly matched and pointed at the receiving end on your car, it virtually makes it useless. Wouldn't wast a dime on laser protection odds of it receiving a laser beam from a cop very minimul, it's not like a radar signal it's a light beam. Best thing you can do is slam on your brakes there's small chance as your speed is decelerating his system will fail to lock the speed, and ask always to see his gun.

The other side of Radar

This guy pretty much says it's all taken from text I believe in, and Law enforcement officers I personally know....

I've been using radar detectors since the 1970s, and got my first radar-laser combo detector in 1992. I got my first one at Radio Shack and it worked fine...and I'm sure it paid for itself many times over by tipping me off to the existence of police radar and giving me time to check (and adjust if necessary) my speed. I still use an Escort Passport Solo 4 and even after learning what I'm about to share with you in this special report, I'll still continue to use my radar/laser detector.

The newer laser technology is pretty good (from the law enforcement perspective) and pretty tough to "beat" them...thanks to some help from the best and brightest Fort Worth P.D. has to offer, one thing has become painfully clear: No matter how good you think your reactions are, you're no match for today's speed limit enforcement technology. We tested some of the best detectors available on the market today and frankly, it doesn't matter how much you spend, you're dead meat. The more expensive detectors have some additional bells-and-whistles, but the fact remains: Even if you had reflexes like an NHL-caliber goalie, you're no match for today's radar/laser technology. Why? Read on...

Static vs. Trigger Radar Guns

When I mentioned the fact that I'll continue to use my radar/laser detector, I'm not doing so because I'm trying to delude myself into thinking I've gotta chance in the cat-and-mouse game of speeding without getting caught. Most of the radar I encounter is on I-30 between Dallas and Fort Worth, and my detector goes off when the police are popping speeders with their "gun" radar units...I'm lucky enough in most cases to be going slow enough, and not be driving in the far-left lane and I usually avoid the pink slip. When my detector goes off, usually it's someone else getting the ticket in front of me.

But more and more law enforcement agencies are using "gun" radar units. They're off until the cop pulls the trigger and it suddenly sends a burst of radar waves out that send your detectors screaming off of your dashboards. If you're in the wrong place or going the fastest (in the eyes of the cops), you lose. Hearing the radar detector react to these bursts gives you a chance to slow down and hopefully avoid an expensive day in court. Older law enforcement agencies will use the static radar units that you can pick-up in plenty of time to adjust your speed. Maybe.

Bottom line? Today's radar detectors that I personally tested at the Texas Motor Speedway for this story all worked...just too late. The detectors all went off about the same time/distance from the police officers operating them. The problem? The cops had us "locked in" anywhere from .5 to 1.0 seconds before the detectors went off in the car. You're busted!

Laser "Guns" = Instant Tickets

I've gotten my share of tickets as a result of police officers' using laser guns to detect my speed. A word to the wise: If you own a laser detector (most detectors sold today are "combination" units that detect both radar and laser) and the "laser portion" of your detector goes off? Take my advice...slow down, and get out your drivers license and insurance card, because you're dead meat. They've got you. It doesn't matter how quick or how hard you jam on your brakes--it's over. Get ready to put on a good face for the police officer you're about to be visited by.

"May I see your license please???"

The best piece of advice I can give you as you're about to roll down your window to greet the law enforcement official that's about to give you a ticket? Don't be an ass. Don't be disrespectful. And for God's sakes, don't be memorable! Memorable?

The installed 2 in the front and 2 in the rear.

When we were discussing it, at least for my car, the argument was between 1 or 2 in the rear, 3 in the front never came up.

There's multiple forums with countless posts that prove the exact opposite of this.

Interesting. My guy probably trying to inflate the price on me with three upfront. Hmm,

What mirror did you buy for the M4 and what do you do for rear radar protection?
