That's is my thinking too. A local (reputable) Dinan dealer did explain to me it is allowed on leases, however.

My guess is yes. I doubt if they would even ask whether you bought or leased. Either way they want your money!

I guess bmw financial has no way of knowing that its been done if the car is still under full warranty..I could be completely wrong.

If Dinan does indeed cover the warranty, then BMW financial has nothing to lose.

i would like to kno this aswell. i have brought up the question many times.
i have a 3 year lease. tha means the flash is good under warranty for 4 years. my dealer is not a dinan dealer. would i need to flash the car back to stock when i bring it back?

I would think that BMw would know because i think Dinan requires the Vin numbers to be given to BMW...They have a contract that binds them together as far as warranty so both parties must know the cars that have the reflash.

+1. From what I understand, since Dinan modded cars cannot be sold as a Certified Pre-Owned BMW with 100,000 mile warranty, purchasing the car will be required at end of lease. My brother-in-law had to do that with his 330i lease, and took a $6000 loss.

Waste of money on a lease ... just go get a SSTT, and when the lease is up, sell the SSTT.

+2

When I was at the dealer last week my SA told me that if I went that route I'd be buying it at the end.

My buddy has a lease and he is getting the flash, he was told by the dealer and Dinan that there would not be an issue with the return of the car. The dealer is providing a letter with language to that effect. Given the disparity in replies, I suggest you get it in writing.

As long as the car is returned to OEM spec, or is modified with OEM parts, lease doesn't matter. I would still get it in writing, in case you have to return it to a different dealer, or the dealership is sold, etc.

De-mod'ing back an ECU flash to OEM is easy. However, I bet the car would be bought as-is by someone at the dealer before it was reflashed.

you won't get anything back when you turn in the leased car, basically just dropping 2k and getting nothing back after you return it. Get a JB2 or a SST or a Procede and then remove it and sell it at lease end.

phantom 330,
How many people do you think would consider ANY modification as an investment? I hope, none. I would guess that most mods are purchased for the sheer enjoyment that they provide their owners.
I understand what you're saying about having some hardware that could be sold once the car is gone, as opposed to a flash that leaves the owner with nothing tangible to sell. The expenses that would be recaptured upon such a resale, though, would be quite limited, so it all comes back to personnal preference and warranty issues, no?

I'm sure the Dinan flash is great if you have the $$ to throw around. Having your warranty is nice, but it's certainly easy to take out a chip if you need to have service. They certainly aren't an investment, but if you lease your car and turn it in with a 2k mod you basically just flushed that money down the drain. Why not get something where you can recoup party of your initial investment? Makes more sense in my book but certainly do as you will. If I had the $$ to waste I would probably get the Dinan chip, but then again if I had money to blow I probably wouldn't be driving a 3 series.

It doesn't matter what Dinan is saying. The leasng firm owns the car. They are to decide whether or not to allow such a tune. It all comes down to the risk of selling a modded car. You should expect that the value of the car further decreases by 5-10k by performance tunes which they will charge you for. You may as well consider to buy the car yourself after. Ask the leasing firm.
