Potential Issue When Braking

Every time I brake from say 50-60 MPH down to a full stop I hear a humming sound. Is this normal? Should I be looking into this and reporting it to the dealership at the 1200mile break-in service or is this normal? Has anybody else experienced this?

In the manual it says that the brakes can make sounds under certain conditions so i think its normal.

My brakes can make a humming sound when i been braking hard but not when driving normal/slow ,i have the standard brakes.

Same here but seeing as it only does it under hard braking I'm not as concerned as if it was on a consistent basis. But I will mention it at break in servicing.

Yes if they hummed all the time it would be annoying.

This is caused by the cross-drilled rotors. It will go away in time.

Cool, I figured that is what it was but just thought I'd post about it to reassure myself.

if the humming goes away actually the holes in your rotors are all clogged up with caked brake dust. need to poke that crud out. the humming noise is good!

Guys, 2000km and the humming noise is still happening. Took it in for service, they say that they've cleaned the back rotors, no difference. Still getting the sound, opinions at dealership service department is:
1- its normal, this is the sound of the differential.
2- we need to check other m3's
3- this is normal

I find it weird to tell you the truth. Others riding in my car have noticed as well.

Any ideas?

All the cars that I had with drilled or slotted rotors make this noise when using the brakes somewhat aggressively. Both my E92 M3's did and the same with my M4.

Gearhead999s hmm, thanks! but really, sometimes not even under aggressive usage, just normal stopping pressure. Kind of weird to tell you the truth. The dealership has asked that I bring it back later for more checkups but the look of the brake structure (pads, rotors, shield, etc) looks normal.

Mines the same. The noise is the same as when I had cooked the brakes in my E36 328 years ago. You know the noise, 100-0 too many times in succession and on the fourth attempt brakes gone, brown pant moment and an accompanying drone from the brakes telling you that you've been driving like an ass.

My M4 makes exactly the same noise on occasion but under moderate braking however the actual brake operation is normal and unaffected by the noise. And also not as a result of heavy braking previously it seems a bit random. At first it was a concern but I now ignore it. I've done about 1850 miles in the car so far so still new.

Hmm.. so it seems a lot of the forum members are experiencing the same thing! It just weirds me out though brake operation is normal as stated. I'd expect that a car of such value shouldn't have that noise.

There is another thread about this.

It seems to be the pad material used in the steel brakes.
