E90 N55 oil cooler

Hi all, fairly new to the forum. I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer to this question: Do all E90 N55's have oil coolers? Only some? or none at all?

I have an E90 N55 Sport Package, and I'm trying to figure out if I have one. Thanks!

I just received my Bentley manual that's been updated to include the N55. Page 100-10 indicates that the N55 engine has an external oil cooler. I also have the sport package on my e90 sedan and my cooler is located on the passenger side, the cover is right in front of the wheel.

Yep...should be standard now, even with later model N54s (not the earlier ones though, regretfully.)

Here is the easiest way to confirm. Go to your car and look at the forward face of the passenger side front wheel well. If there is a vent/grate there you have an oil cooler.

If you have M-sport then it should have it. Otherwise no.

jwzimm is partially correct because all LCI E92 (I believe E90s do too; not sure about pre-LCI) come with the grate but it does not mean that there is an oil cooler behind it. Turn the wheel and look at the grate you should be able to see it also you should see some hoses running back there.

^^ Only if you got the 18" wheel package which comes with the "High Speed Synchronization" option (higher speed limit). That caused the oil cooler to be added. There is still some debate even on that though.

^^^This is correct. I had a 2011 335xi with the sport option (non-m-sport) The car did not have the bigger factory oil cooler. I now have a newer m-sport and she does have the oil cooler. I never had an issue on the 11 but the 13 certainly runs cooler and in harder conditions...

simplest way to check is this.....look at your oil filter housing. If you have two hoses coming off the front of the housing off to the passenger side and down towards the frame rail, you have the oil cooler. If you do not have those hoses, then you unfortunately do not have the cooler.

Yeah, sport pack came with 18" wheels, so.......I don't see how you could have a 2011 e90 with sport pack and NOT have 18s as standard.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I went and checked it out, I do see two houses coming out of the front and going down on the passenger side. I also looked in the passenger side wheel well, and I see a small grate and inside I see what looks like a small radiator, for lack of a better word. So it does appear that I have one.

FWIW - yes I have the 18", mixed tires.

I think we all have an oil cooler. Its just that some have the "upgraded" oil cooler, which allows for the PPK kit. Currently, there is an aftermarket oil cooler available as well.

Sorry but this is incorrect. I originally ordered mine with the M-sport pack and it came by default with 17" style 194m wheels. I was lucky and got my PA to add the 18" 193m wheels which then added the speed limiter increase (due to the higher speed rating tires) and this added the oil cooler. Pretty convoluted.

Nope. All cars have a water to oil cooler built in to the radiator but the addition of the auxiliary oil cooler in the passenger wheel well is only on certain cars.

I hear ya. The mentality of BMW was that no one would ever be tracking or pushing the 335s to their limit.

BMW was sorely mistaken it seems, so they started including the oil coolers standard.

They definitely never included the aux oil cooler as standard. You have always needed the sport package with 18" wheels with the increased speed limiter.
I have a 2011 with the 17" wheels and do not have the oil cooler.
