ATF Level

Does anyone know how to check the automatic transmission fluid level?

Is there a dip stick or does the on board computer check the level? Can the average owner check the level in his garage?

What ATF does the E90 use? Is it different than the E46 or E30? Is it Dexron III or a new synthetic?

Only way to check it is to remove the filling bolt and sticking your finger in

Its a Lifetime fill

The one used depends on the transmission model

I have the 6 speed Steptronic Automatic. I believe it is the ZF6HP 19 model that is also used in the 5, 6 and 7 series.

Do you know what ATF is used and the BMW part number? Any idea if it is expensive?

Why do you want to know? Why would you want to mess with it? There´s nothing to be gained by messing with it. If you´re having any kind of problem with the gearbox, don´t mess with the fluids yourself, just bring it in. You´re still under full warranty, but may void your warranty if you start fiddling with the filling in your gearbox.

I am not going to do anything until the 100K change but want to estimate the costs for my maintenance spreadsheet. I will have the dealer or qualified facility change the ATF and replace the filter at that time.

I plan on keeping my 325xi for at least 12 years. I had a Nissan Pathfinder for over 16 years when I lived in Colorado.

I have determined that my 6spd Steptronic is a 6HP 19 made by ZF (Actually GA 6HP 19Z from the realOEM wbsite). The ATF is Shell M-1375.4 (BMW part # 83 22 0 142 516). I estimated that it takes 6 liters based on the other BMW transmissions.

Hi everyone,

This is my 1st post here. I just read a TechTalk ariticle in Roundel (Feb 06 issue) regarding gearbox and differential oil change. Mike Miller strongly believes that both of the oils (in addition to the engine oil) should be changed after the break-in period. He does not trust the "lifetime fill" claimed by the dealer/BMW. Has anyone done or knows how to change the oil for these? I don't suppose you can go to the dealer and ask them to change under warranty.
