GoPro Mic Test (VIDEO) on N55 + PPK v2 + PE + DCT

I've been recording my track day sessions for a few years now and while I've been able to improve on the video quality and data acquisition capabilities, the one area that's always been subpar is the sound quality. I finally bought an external microphone and decided to test it out on my 135is.

Let me know your thoughts, I'm pretty happy with the quality. I mounted the microphone on my rear bumper, few inches above the muffler.

Hardware: GoPro Hero3+ Black and Audio-Technica PRO 24 mic

Nope, car is entirely stock when it comes to motor, exhaust, etc. Only have suspension mods and few other aesthetics (see Garage in my sig).

Ah ok- so strange, there's like a descending whistle when you lay off the acceleration... it must just be a phenomenon of the microphone and ambient sound around the area

I'm also curious to know how you mounted the mic and where you run the cable to the interior mounted cam. I had considered that model of microphone for the exact same application, but opted for the much smaller (and cheaper) Audio-Technica ATR3350. Does the PRO 24 draw power from the GoPro or do you use a battery?

On track days, I run a zip tie through the mesh of my Performance diffuser just above the exhaust and use the included tie clip to attach the mic. Then I run the cable along the side of the trunk beside the gasket, under the trunk lid, then up and out to the rear windshield where I mount a second rear facing GoPro 2.

GoPro mounted using cruisecam mount which attaches to headrest. I used a narrow angle and cropped it further so my head wouldn't show up as much lol. 1080p, 60fps.

My track videos (different car) use the same setting but you can see the field of vision is much wider. You can also see how bad the wind is:

I mounted the mic directly onto my back bumper using a suction mount since the camera uses your standard camera threaded screw mount

For this test, I just ran the audio cable through the back seat coming out of the trunk. I'll come up with a more elegant solution for track days.

I should also note I purchased a separate "dead cat" mic cover to further cut down on the wind noise.

You're OK with pinching the audio cable with the closed trunk? I was concerned about longevity of the wiring, that's why I opted to run it as I did to my externally mounted rear cam.

I also use a CruiseCam mount for my interior cam. My last event at The Glen with BMWCCA Patroon, they wouldn't allow it to pass tech unless I affixed it to the car in a supplemental manner. I ended up daisy chaining a bunch of zip ties from the GoPro case to the headrest. Obviously, I'd like to come up with a more elegant solution going forward. Further, they wouldn't allow the external cam period unless it was mechanically affixed, no suction cups. I'm thinking of sticking a couple security cables to the car to avoid the potential hassle at tech in the future.

Can you post a link to the mic cover you use?

Eh for the $5 it costs to replace the cable not sweating it. And like I said this was a quick test but I'll try to come up with a more elegant solution for track days.

Regarding CCA - easy fix don't run with them. Overly anal & little track time usually the case, I rarely run with them. I much prefer PCA.

Here's the link to the mic cover, not cheap but I read this was guaranteed fit for the mic I got is didn't want to waste time trying out cheaper options.

Funny, I ran with a PCA club for the first time this year, PCA Allegheny, also at The Glen and my take away was PCA clubs were "overly anal & little track time" . 1) they said PCA banned all recording devices starting in 2014, period. Ostensibly due to liability was the paddock consensus. 2) sessions were only 21 minutes long and the schedule was ridiculously confusing as a result, with sessions starting at like 13 mins after the hour. I think maybe it's about finding clubs run well on local level, irrespective of national group. I see you've run with PCA Potomac, I'll keep them in mind for next season. Any others who run in the northeast you'd recommend?

PCA Schattenbaum $280 for 2 days, best deal in town hands down. PCA NNJR and Delaware are really good as well. Potomac is closer up CCA in terms of value.

Sounds great though! I have PPK2, but no PE. The high rev snaps and burbles are similar to what I get, but I don't get the exuberant throaty howl as much. It's there, but muted.
