Remapping?
Had an interesting chat with one of the UK's foremost remappers today, who we use from time to time, especially on cars that are out of warranty. For a few months now they've been offering remaps for the M5, with other F10s in development as the encryption had been broken. But it seems that some of these cars have recently received a service update, overwriting the remap. Usually in these circumstances the company would reinstall the map free of charge and all would be well, but on these cars new encryption had been added too. Even worse, a "check engine" light appeared. With BMW sharing fewer engines between more and more models it seems they are tightening up on those planning to use this method to turn a base model into a higher one.

Entirely sensible from BMWs point of view.
Why spend €1billion on developing a new model and make it easy for some back street Jonny with a laptop to screw around with your investment?! |

But, if you bought the car, then it's your property so you should be able to do what you want with it!

Ironically, the modding community could shift from cars out of warranty to cars in warranty - only because the check engine light won't be picked up in an MOT until it's 3 years old

I just don't agree with the practice of companies making their products so that they can't be fiddled with, as if it's still their property even though you own it! If you buy something then it should be your choice what you do with it! Like how apple try to make their products so you can't replace the batteries! |

The other thing that might happen is that owners wishing to mod their car will just use independent bmw specialists for servicing and any other work that needs to be done....why do bmw offer performance packs on the lower model engines yet they do not for the top ones ie. with the 335d left standard being very close to the 330d with the performance pack upgrade

It could also in theory make buying 2nd hand a bit of a minefield.
Buying a 2nd hand 335, even an M3. Then taking it to garage for engine issue for them to tell you your 30k car long longer has a valid BMW warranty. They would be in their rights with if a private or non dealer sale. |
