Electric water pumps in BMWs are prone to failure, they're made a lot out of plastic, electronics break, etc.. parts are anywhere between $400-600, labor is probably at least as much, so give or take $1500 all said and done.. Get the thermostat done while you're at it! Should cost much more.

Pretty well documented the n54 waterpumps are a ticking time bomb. No rhyme or reason. They can go anywhere from 50k - 1??k gl man.
Parts are about 400-500 some odd dollars. Labor can be a couple or a few hours. Recommendation is replace thermostat at the same time. Gl, let us know when you get a professional diagnosis and estimate pls.

On my other forum people have the dealer change light bulbs (not led).
I'm not knocking anyone, but we seem to be a society today who pays others to do everything. Like filing income tax, buying a house, amortizing a mortgage, changing oil, all stuff our parents likely did themselves. It is what it is..... |

Advice for the future (if you don't want to be bashed every time): don't ask questions about items that are clearly explained in the manual... with pictures and all... like for 8 year olds... |

My thermometer warning light came on at Buttonwillow Raceway in May. slowed down for half a lap and it went away. My overflow tank was empty so I was just a little low on coolant. Pump is fine (no noise, no further overheating), filled the overflow with a little more than a pint of water and went about my merry way. No issues since and it's been fairly hot in central San Diego County for the last several weeks. |

Point is, there are certain things where you don't get a second chance. You have an issue with your car and keep trying to drive it. Say goodbye to a vacation fund or about $5-10K dollars replacing an engine. Just saying, you really need to familiarize yourself first, be proactive, not reactive, it could definitely save you down the road.

Sounds indeed a TS and/or WP failure; I've been pretty fortunate, still on my original TS/WP @ 116K miles on the clock. Though, probably best to get those replaced for ya.
