I think what happened is the seat bottom side bolder foam has broken down and split. The bolster is formed by a metal bar loop that is usually covered in foam. Once the foam splits open the bar has no padding around it.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Can I go in through the bottom maybe and pull the piece downward so it isn't pushing against leather i'm worried someone is going to sit down and it will puncture.

BMW sells the seat foam for the cushion. Get a new cushion and have an upholsterer install it for you.
