ECU software - how to see what it was updated to?

I had some work done on my car at an indy and asked him to update the software.

When I picked up the car I asked him what the updates addressed (as I had no idea what versions were on the car prior) and he said something to the effect of "Who knows? They never release that info."

How do I check what versions of the ECU and iDrive software are installed as at this point as I'm no too confident that the update was actually performed. I haven't noticed a difference in anything so far, and I know the software hasn't been updated on the car in at least 3 or 4 years.

If you car is an E9x the the software for it will be legacy now the F series is in production. Given this, the effort for BMW to maintain / update the E9x sotfware is a cost with no business reason for it to be any more expensive than possible. The only kind of software updates will be bug fixes or any changes required by law but NOT new features.

This is just a guess, but an educated one as I work in the software industry.

This! Also working in the software industry, they will only release maintenance fixes, nothing new. I believe the last E series update (new stuff) was around 2011.

The question was actually how do I check the software versions installed on my car, not when were the latest new features add to the software.

Thanks for the replies anyway.

I'm just guessing but I bet you need something like INPA to see what both those are unless there's a hidden menu where it will show those.

In INPA, you go into "functional module", and you select F5 to get "satus", that will give you the software version and release date for all modules.

Looks like I'll give INPA a go.

Thanks.

I had Cobb check to see if I could use a Cobb AP. The person who helped me said there were several "latest versions" depending on which options you received. He also mentioned that BMW usually updates the DME anytime you take it in for servicing and they find there is newer software available.

If you know someone who has a Cobb AP, it can read the DME version.
